...Wow, up to three years?! Unbelievable....

Like it or not, clamping is a livelihood for some people.

If your trade/job was going to be banned, you might appreciate a bit of notice to make alternative arrangements to pay the mortgage, feed the kids, etc.

There are livelihoods and then just roles which make life miserable for honest people paying their way. Clampers, parking attendants, the DVLA who send you fines because when selling your car to a registered dealer, noone bothers to tell you that you need to tell the DVLA that you're selling your own freaking property.

What you didn't know that if you sell your car you have to tell the DVLA you are no longer the keeper ?

Huh? The DVLA holds records of car ownership. You transfer the ownership of your car to someone else, but it doesn't occur to you to tell the DVLA...? I just don't get how a car owner could not know this...!

Neither do I it is written on the V5 enough times! However being pedantic the DVLA hold the record of the "registered keeper" which is not always the owner of the vehicle.
However as you say the registered keeper should know they need to send the V5 to the DVLA when they dispose of the vehicle!

When sent to them it all too often "goes missing". You do not receive their confirmation letter and because you actually have a life and are getting on with stuff you forget all about it until you get some letters.

I'm disheartened and dismayed that clampers are not being banned any time soon, I had believed they would be gone by now. I am particularly pleased if clampers get spat at, beaten, put in hospital, or shot at with guns though. Shows how determined they are in their organised crime, and how much their crime pays, if those things really happen all that often and they carry on regardless.

    things are looking up then.

Looks like the bill will now go through Parliament in the next few days, and will be law before year end.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1355005/Wheel-clamping-private-land-criminal-offence.html
clamping on private land – typically land owned by individuals but also including, for example, train station and supermarket car parks – will be banned outright.

Towing away will also be outlawed, with private landowners – who often share in clamping firms’ profits – restricted to erecting barriers to keep drivers out or charging regulated parking fees.

But now, under an outright ban far tougher than even campaigners had hoped for, clampers will risk not only an unlimited fine but also a criminal record for life which they would have to declare when they apply for new jobs.

The criminal offence will be punishable by an unlimited fine before the Crown Court for more serious cases, or up to £5,000 in magistrates court.

Home Office Minister Lynne Featherstone blasted the 'extortion and abuse' from rogue clamping companies

The ban will be introduced in Parliament in the Coalition’s flagship Protection of Freedoms Bill in the next few days.

It is expected to become law by the end of the year and brings England and Wales into line with Scotland – where clamping on private land has been outlawed since 1992.

Excellent news if correct! [Daily Mail??] The bit about erecting barriers or charging regulated parking fees is interesting! I wonder if there is something in that, we haven't heard about?

Clampers risking a criminal record they have to declare when applying for jobs? Sorry but don't most clampers already have one of those?! :)

It was actually reported on the local radio news last night, when I searched after hearing the report, the DM was the one with the most info which is why I quoted it. (I probably should have searched for a more truthful source but it has nothing to do with immigration or benefits so thought it was fairly safe to use ;) )

    Edit
The Telegraph is reporting it today as well

Cowboy clampers to be targeted in new legislation
Clamping on private land will become a crime, councils will be banned from snooping and the DNA records of innocent people will be taken off the Government database under changes to the law to be announced this week.
