My eldest son has been claiming JSA since end of November - he had previously done an engineering apprenticeship from the age of 16 and after his 4 years was made redundant. He was given 2 jobs to apply for by jc - both of which he did not have the experience for and decided not to apply. He has however emailed his cv to around 20 companies and had 2 replies saying they have nothing available. He has seen 3 jobs in the local paper which he has appled for, he has had 2 interviews but unfortunatley on both occasions he did not get the jobs, he also has another interview next week.........HOWEVER the JC have this week sent him a letter saying they are stopping his JSA as he has not applied for the jobs which they gave to him - he has spoken to the nice people in there when he goes to sign on once a fortnight explaining what he has been doing and that he is very active in looking for a job but not the 2 they thought would suit him - but to no avail.........so be warned apply for anything they throw at you :mad::mad:0

Andy46,
I can't answer your first point as every individuals travel to work area will differ. I live in a reasonable sized city however the Jobcentre in which I'm employed is out of the city centre. It's about a 20 min bus ride into the city centre and about 20 min journey to the opposite side of the city. Taking into consideration hanging around to change buses etc I would expect my customers to look for employment anywhere in the city.
It takes me 25 minutes to drive from home to work during the rush hour but if I was to travel by public transport I'd need to catch two buses which would take about an hour.
Point 2) If the work is out of the travel to work area i.e. you could not get there by public transport in either 60 or 90 minutes (depending on how long you've been claimimg JSA) it shouldn't make any difference if you catch a bus, train, have a bicycle, car, motorbike or even a private helicopter you will not be sanctioned for refusing employment. If you are sanctioned you should raise an appeal stating that the employment was out of your travel to work area (as stated on your JSAg (jobseekers agreement)).
Point 3) You've got it. Your travel to work area is either 60 or 90 minutes by public transport - doesn't make any difference if you own a Ferrari or a rusty old penny farthing, they are irrelevant to your travel to work area.0 -
Apologies to the OP as this is aimed at other posters in this thread.
There's a lot of talk about people being sanctioned for not applying to vacancies given to them by JCP staff because they weren't relevant. The Jobcentre staff do not just give you jobs to apply for, or throw jobs at you to apply for. You as a jobseeker must accept them from the jobcentre staff member. If they're not suitable for you because they ask for skills or qualifications that you don't possess politely inform the staff member that you don't have the skills / experienced required and could they MATCH you with a vacancy that you are able to apply for. You could always be really cheeky and ask your adviser to act as an advocate on your behalf and phone the employer up for you to arrange an interview. It'd be interesting to be a fly on the wall listening to an adviser explaining that no you don't have the skills, qualifications or experience required but they thought you would be an ideal candadate for the vacancy.0 -

He doesn't receive the JSA benefit probably due to savings but he still signs on the same as everyone else,0 -
I must admit, I keep getting given jobs to apply for as a cnc miller/turner just because I used to be a cnc setter/operator (brake presses). I know I don't have any experience, but still apply for them as I have a great interest in that side of engineering and hope that one day I will be able to get my foot in the door and show that I can pick-up such a job quickly.Never Knowingly Understood.

If you want a job only in only a certain field and are not prepared to look at any other field in the meantime, then you shouldn't be allowed to claim JSA.
As I said before if you don't like the rules then don't play the game.
I didn't spend 5 years in education after school to work minimum wage in any old !!!!!! job. I've worked a year in TV industry, so even if I applied for others they won't take me as they know I'll quit as soon as I get a TV job.
Job centre staff are just annoyed cause a lot of them hate that they work there, having to deal with lazy chavs or just lazy idiots. I'm not one of them, I look for jobs, unlike them. I had about 7 TV jobs last year, only 4 weeks or so claiming JSA last year in between those. I don't work hard in those TV jobs to work as a receptionist for a random company.
If I spend 13 weeks without TV work, then yeah I may look at other jobs, but TV has a slow time end of December, beginning of January.
Sorry that I've got ambitions!0 -
I wonder at what point it might click that simply forcing people to look harder for jobs in a recession isn't going to work.0

Trying to get some people to actually look for a job would be a start.0

It is those people that the JC needs to address, not those who are reasonably looking for work that they can actually do and makes financial sense. Another print out for a job I received was for 3.5 hours a week, where I would be out of pocket after travel. It is just silly.
So far I have questioned all the jobs passed to me, and insisted they only pass on ones I am qualified to do.
Still, they messed up my claim four weeks ago which I am still sorting out, so they have broken our 'contract'0
