Milo - I have read this thread with great interest and shall await the outcome. I work in retail with a major player on the high street. I have done the cash pick-up at night and the procedure is absolutely water tight. We had dual-control. I was never on my own with the money and there was a lot of it. I was on camera. I had a manager plus another assistant AT ALL TIMES. I was in short NEVER on my own with any money whatsoever. I cant believe that this company that you have named (not a wise move there) actually had this procedure that you went through (goodwill or not, training or not, back up or not) and actually expected you (or anyone else for that matter) to do this on your own. The manager should be held to account here AS WELL. He should have been suspended on full pay until this case was investigated by your Head Office/Financial department.
Your head was firmly on the chopping block immediately but I think you should rally as much suppoprt as you can gather. You should be shouting your innocence here to anyone who listens. You should be banging on doors, ringing and making yourself heard. Someone here has to offer a realistic reason/proof that you took the money. And you have to defend yourself because noone else will. Dont just lay there and get kicked around. Stand up for yourself FGS.
Hope the appeal works in your favour. Keep us posted. Someones head should roll higher up......0 -

i have no intentions of letting them get away with it,i will fight them all the way dont you worry about that0 -
I have been following this and i am confused.
If the money was counted the night before, and it tallied as per receipts, and no-one else accessed the safe until the next morning when the OP counted her till.
If £180 was found to be missing, surely everyone would be detained, the police called and everyone asked to empty their pockets, lockers searched etc until it turned up, if no money is present, then possibly it was taken the night before. Or as someone else has said a miscount.
Whilst on suspension, you should have had another interview to clear any facts before being sacked.

Retail managers these days aren't earning big bucks, Trust me, I know, My previous manager was on £12000 a year before tax ! So i guess for some its to tempting to dip there hands in the safe when they're confronted with £1000's of pounds, And why not blame it on someone else ? Its there word against yours, Harsh reality of the world we live in today !' You only live once ! Don't live to regret the past, But to enjoy the future '

As a side-bar - I do think you are being 'framed' here. I sincerely hope that the said manager gets the sack as it would appear that from the time difference he had his fingers in the till so to speak and you being just a lowly sales assistnt copped it good and proper.0

I have worked in retail before and our assistant manager was caught borrowing money from the safe (he paid it back in later on). It had been going on for a long time and they installed security cameras in the cash office to prove it.
And thats exactly how other previous thefts were caught out on the shop floor. They started installing cameras under the tills and they caught two people this way.
Where we worked they didn't sack anyone unless they had proof, and if you did something bad they'd usually send you home with pay.
I wish you all the best, sounds fishy indeed.0 -
