Just a little thought, but in particular for those small companies that cannot be a***d to spend a minute of their time to give a thanks but no thanks email response for a rejection, could be in a situation soon afterwards when one of those applicants would then find a job and then be a potential customer.

That person could then be in a situation where they might want to give a multi-thousand pound business order to that company. Who would they want to give the business too?

    either.

    1) The Company who could not be a***d to reply to his application.
    2) The Company who courteously responded to his application.

I know which one I would place the business with.

I know which one I would do business with as well.

The one that provided the product I wanted, with the quality I want, with the service and support I want at the best price.

If you are going to make decisions on who to do business with based on whether they replied to a job application you made once then I really hope, for the sake of your company, you have no involvment in this process.

    I doubt it.

But by stating that it's possible

I was using my example based on dealing with both companies on a level playing field and also for individuals dealing with them but not to cut off your nose to spite your face.

I know If I owned a company and found out that I had lost a large order due to the fact I could not be bothered to reply to an email application. I would do something about it in the future.

Placing an order for me would depend a lot on reliability of the company and service they could offer. The fact that one company had the courtesy to respond to an application would for me give them an immediate head start.

Sorry but including whether a company responds to a job application or not in supplier selection criteria is just rediculous. I'm guessing that you are not involved and never have been involved with supplier selection. I have been and in a previous role used to run the external auditing process for supplier selection. Your example is nonsense and I would probably have been sacked if one of my audit criteria had been do companies respond to all job applications.

As previous posters have already pointed out you can receive hundreds of applications for a single role to reply to all of them is not practical, especially for SME's.

Personally, if I were ignoring high calibre candidates I would be more concerned about them going to work for a competitor than going to work for a potential customer.

But then, I wouldn't be ignoring high calibre candidates.

I get 3/4 speculative applications a week and I respond to all of those, however when I advertise a job and get 100+ responses I am not going to write to those that don't get an interview as its to costly. However if they leave an email address I will do a quick thanks but no thanks to those as it doesn't take that much time.

    Which is fair enough.

It can be annoying and disheartening but due to the amount of applicants applying for a job in the current climate, it just is not realistic to respond to every unsuccessful applicant.

I would imagine that many HR departments have suffered cutbacks and restructuring and in many cases I suspect there is not the time or resources to respond to every job applicant and the mindset of applicants should be that if I get a response - then fine - if I don't, then don't take it personally.

In the majority of cases it is not a matter of being discourteous or unsympathetic, it is just not a realistic option

Sadly, that is the way it is today - like it or not.

Failing to get a response after a first or indeed a second interview however, is a completely different matter.

I have been there stassy - hopefully your partner will get a response, but failing to provide the outcome of an interview (particularly a second one) is lamentable.

Have you tried calling the company to see what is happening? If you don't hear back by when you are told to expect to hear back by then give them a call.

  • There is no more respect in this country.

Not providing a 'Thanks but no thanks' for people who have spent time, money and effort going to an interview is truly disgusting..
