Just wanted to point out that many libraries allow the free loan of ebooks but the Kindle does NOT support these (and is unlikely to any time soon). If you wanted to borrow ebooks for free the Sony Reader does support this (sure some other ereaders do too but not exactly sure which ones).

To be honest I thought this would be quite a drawback to the kindle but the 2 e-libraries I have joined both have a very limited selection so even without the kindle I would still need to supplement borrowing e-books with buying them.

There is also a way to convert e-library epub and pdf books but not strictly legit so will leave that to people to google. Haven't found a way to convert mobipocket to kindle yet.

I enjoy having a selection of books to hand with the kindle depending on what I feel like reading - I have 2 or 3 books on the go at the moment.

Anyone with a kindle should sign up to jungle search which will mean you get an email everytime a new free book is listed - its not just classics that are free.

You can also check out Kindle Lending Club, it lets people loan some of their Kindle books. You list books you want to loan, and others go to the site and "borrow" them, which involves transferring the license to them for 14 days, then the license goes back to you. All done through Amazon I think. Haven't tried it yet, but it apparently protects your privacy etc.

Just looked it up and it seems its not affilated with kindle or amazon.

Does anyone use it? Any good?

I'm a Kindle convert. I was adamant it couldn't replace a book, but hubby got me one for Christmas and I love it. The screen is amazing like the other poster said, you can't really describe it but it doesn't make my eyes hurt. The battery life is impressive and its a really comfortable size to hold and operate. A thumbs up from me! :)
I love my Kindle too. Only thing I miss is reading in the bath.

To keep it MSE (ish), many books are available for free on Kindle, especially the classics.

OP, sounds like an amazing bargain, enjoy.

I've been considering such a thing myself, but I'm confused between Kindle, Sony or a tablet. Reckon I'll wait a few more months for more reviews once everyone's played with their Chrissy pressies a while longer.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

You can convert ANY format to Kindle using a free AP. Calibre I think it's called ;-)
  • Reading kindle in bath is possible - put it in a big ziplock freezer bag - or two if you are paranoid!! :-) Simples!

There is a facebook page where people are discussing it, you might look there for comments. I just checked it out yesterday for the first time, haven't looked into it much yet. Just search for Kindle Lending Club on facebook.
