Benchy, I've not got time to read through all the replies, and having seen some of the squabbling I'm not sure I'd want to anyway.

I went travelling for 10 months a few years ago, and I DID get a loan to help towards it. It's all very well to say 'you'll appreciate it more if you've saved', but I really didn't (and still don't) see much difference between saving and then going, or getting a loan, then paying it back. So long as you're not going overboard with the spending, then it's all the same.

I got a 5k loan via a credit card (at a special offer interest rate) deposit into my current account, not sure if you'll be able to get that, do you have a credit card(s) already? Hows your credit rating?

There has been some fun on here this afternoon, but THAT is one dangerous post!

Yes it is, this is a money SAVING forum, not a "how to get into debt quickly" forum.

Speak to your parents they should be able to loan you the money or at least get a loan out for you. I gave my children money to go abroad, maybe not enough as the blighters came back after a year.

I'm going to give you another option. If you want to go to Australia you can apply for a working holiday visa so when you get there you can work in Australia legally and earn the money to fund your trip, once you have saved up to by an air ticket that is. It's got to be a better option than saddling yourself with debt surely.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Very good advice above. If your can't make anything of yourself in your native country, another is only going to be harder. Unless you class sitting on a beach with a can of Fosters challenging. If you really want to 'find yourself' how about going to a country with a vaguely differently culture to your own?

Bah! three pages before I saw this :(

Benchy, the only journey you should be making is getting a bus back to school...... SERIOUSLY!!!

You have a woeful attitude, unless it changes significantly, your username gives a good indication of where you will end up sleeping.
  • benchy, this is what i want you to do.. if you really do want to get a loan to travel, that is. call up a local bank/lender, and explain to them what you have informed us. EXACTLY what you have informed us, nothing more, and nothing less. when you have completed that task, please come back and share your outcome. and PLEASE, don't rant and tell us how the person you spoke to is a 'retard' and is a 'stupid loser who lives with his mom' because you did not hear what you wanted to. and then, if you happen to take the original advice given to you, and GROW UP in the slightest bit, you can apologize for being incredibly rude, and trolling this forum while these knowledgeable people have taken THEIR time to help you, despite seeing your incompetence. because the knowledge that has been shared to you already, is GOLD compared to the laugh you're going to hear from the bank/lender, or the ring tone of the phone you will hear when they hang up on you.

best of luck to you, benchy, and your journey to find your inner self. i hope that along the way, you will release the ego of yours and will be able to properly communicate with people, as it will be needed along your adventures.
