How do I know I have better grades then you is because people that use the word 2k9 are chavs. And I believe they have an average IQ of about 0 maybe 1.

And benchy is what people call me so I was thinking thats probably a good start for a username.

An IQ of 0, but maybe 1, still beats you then.

Remember kids: the internet isn't a spelling or grammar contest.

Yeah but he has better GCSE's than me allegedly.

What about A-Levels? are your A-Levels better than mine too? And did you do better in your OCN Level 3 in Conflict Resolution Studies (I'm currently struggling to put into practice what I LEARN'T though...) or in your NVQ in the Financial Services? Did you do better in that also?

I don't think you understand I'm not using it to go on holiday, I will go to a country and work you RETARD!

Not sure who that's aimed at - maybe me... Anyway, I'm not the one who doesn't understand what the words "no chance" mean...

Mate I know more about money then you think I have a full time job and I see hardly any of that money because I have bill's to pay like the rest of the people in this world.

Yay - good for you. We all have bills to pay. Myself, things got out of control many years ago. I ended up with huge debts (due to my OH having health problems leading to a dramatic cut in income) which took a long time to clear. Things are looking better now - but still have to budget and save for what I want. All I'm doing is trying to stop you going into debt over something that is (in the grand scheme of things) quite a trivial WANT. I've been there, got the T-Shirt and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

I don't even know why I'm arguing with you stuck up loser's for people.

What's stuck up about saying that you need to save?

How could we possibly understand them if you haven't divulged them? Give more information and people may be able to offer more help.

You couldn't possibly know that. Besides, maybe they have better A-Level grades or even a degree.

Back to the matter in hand:
    • You have asked for advice, and been given it.
    • You have then chosen not to accept that advice.
    • You have started calling people names because the advice isn't what you want to accept.

TBH - I can't be bothered to waste any more time on you. You're clearly not worth it and there are so many more people here who are in genuine need of help and advice.

    TTFN.

He/She's a kid, with a disgruntled chip on their shoulder, probably seeing stuff on TV about rich middle-class kids running off doing tequila shots in the beaches of Thailand, wanting to do the same but without the concept that simple economics will batter them down if they try to do the same thing

    5 A*s, 3As, 1 C, if you're wondering OP

Personally, i comment as someone who put themselves into over two grand of debt, purely so i could drink my way around 18 American states for 5 weeks (4,500 mile road trip, get in!). However, i had a source of income (summer jobs whilst at uni) lined up after i got back and limited initial debt.

I know quite a few people who got themselves into lots of debt to travel. I don't know many that regret it though. However, they all had decent qualifications before they did it

Benchy, I've not got time to read through all the replies, and having seen some of the squabbling I'm not sure I'd want to anyway.

I went travelling for 10 months a few years ago, and I DID get a loan to help towards it. It's all very well to say 'you'll appreciate it more if you've saved', but I really didn't (and still don't) see much difference between saving and then going, or getting a loan, then paying it back. So long as you're not going overboard with the spending, then it's all the same.

I got a 5k loan via a credit card (at a special offer interest rate) deposit into my current account, not sure if you'll be able to get that, do you have a credit card(s) already? Hows your credit rating?

unfortunately we're in a different economic climate, and anyone reading this board will see that people with a decent credit history built up over a few years, are struggling to get loans, this guy has no credit history worth mentioning, he's 18.

I'm sorry to disagree with you but getting a loan is very different that saving for it. Saving will not incur any interest whatsoever, and he would come back with no debt, coming back with 5k debt is bad, and I'm sure it took a while to pay off and I'm also sure you had to pay back more than that!

It certainly isn't in this thread...

Anyway. OP, yes some of the replies have been harsh and said in a way which I can see would get your back up. We don't all know at 18 what loans are available (I certainly didn't!) or where we are going in life (again, I didn't). And I can completely understand your wish to go abroad and travel.

However, the facts are that at 18 you are very unlikely to have a credit history where a bank or other lender will loan you what you need to travel; there are no specific 'travelling' loans available. Lenders are also unlikely to lend when you're leaving the country with no guarantee of returning (and making your monthly repayments from another country). So it's highly unlikely you will be able to get what you're looking for.

The best thing for you to do in this situation is cut down your outgoings as much as possible, and save what you can (perhaps even get a second job) for 6-12 months. Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear, but what you're looking for isn't available to you at the moment. The only place you could try is your bank, but without a strong credit history I would bet against you at this point!

Because you didn't explain in your first post that you wanted to work abroad, everyone advised you to save up. I think travelling and working abroad is incredibly valuable - I did it at 29, and it changed my life - literally. I quit my London job when I got back, set up my own company and now do what I really want for a living instead of what I was doing before, and I'm much happier for it.

I really hope you get to do it, but in your current position I am quite certain that lenders wouldn't go near you.

    All the best
