I must admit I found the OP alarming at first, then dubious, now this delay in OP coming back with an update makes me doubtful.

As far as I am aware the impound Fee's for a dog is between £25-30 per day, an owner has 7 days to pay the release fee before the dog is classed as a stray and handed over to the local Council Dog Pound.

The owner would have been issued with some paperwork explaining the reasons for the seizure, the costs and a contact number. As far as I am aware, this has not been mentioned.

It just does not sound plausible, this is not even taking a huge £800 fee into account. I am sure if this is genuine, the OP would have returned by now, but I guess it is still early days. It does sound like the kid has made this story up.

Should the OP return with an update, then my apologies, but until then I shall remain doubtful about this story.

Why do you find me dubious? I merely asked for help. I'm 73 for gods sake and not in the habit of making up stories. I gave the facts as I and my daughter know them, and told my daughter I would ask on here as mostly people are helpful I have been at my sons in Sutton for a few days. I haven't found out any more. Will let you know when I do. My grandson is not a liar.

I didnt say I found YOU dubious, I merely said I find the story dubious, because £800 for an overnight stay at a police pound for a dog, is just a little hard to swallow.

There has got to be more to this story than £800 for the return of a dog. I have looked into the costs at a police pound for holding a dog overnight, the impound Fee's for a dog is between £25-30 per day, an owner has 7 days to pay the release fee before the dog is classed as a stray and handed over to the local Council Dog Pound

I do think that the facts as represented by the OP in her first post are a little strange and (imho) unlikely.

However, if she says that's what she's been told, then I have no reason to disbelieve her but I think she needs to get the whole story from her grandson.

Although the OP says he's not a liar I think there may have been some 'embellishment' of the truth here.

Even if the OP isn't anywhere near her grandson, I'm sure he has a mobile and her son will either have one or a landline even if she hasn't.

I thought the £800 bill was for a period of time (and maybe a fee for claiming the dog) not just for one night.

On Christmas eve, my grandson was thrown out of their flat by his girlfriend. (It was about 7 degrees below and freezing ) He took his dog with him and while he was walking to his mothers house the police stopped and searched him. He wasn't drunk or on drugs and nothing was found on him. However because of their aggressive tone, the dog gave a couple of growls, but didn't attempt to attack and was under control all the time.It isn't a banned species. The police took the dog off him and said it would be sent to the dog pound and he could collect it later. However in spite of phoning continuously he has been unable to speak to anybody at the pound, and still hasn't got his dog back.
He has now been informed by them that he has to pay £800 to get the dog back or it will be put down. It will be impossible for him or his mother to find this kind of money and we ,his grandparents can't help.
    Is this really legal?

How did the police 'take the dog off him"?

It would be most unusual (unheard of in these H&S led days) for police to remove a dog from its owner on the grounds that it was dangerous without calling for a qualified dog handler and appropriate transport?

As such there should be plenty of documentation.

The account is so short of vital detail that it's all bar impossible to say anything sensible about the matter.

Is your grandson asking you to lend him this money? Have you seen the demand letter from the police?

Thanks for that. I was just trying to help my grandson but after some of the comments here i will not be asking for any advice about any thing again. He is going to the pound tomorrow (didn't have the address till today only a phone no and as I have already stated he couldn't get through ) He was not drunk or on drugs, if he had been he would have been arrested. Why do people think all young lads are thugs?
We will try some of the other helpful suggestions.

Why did he not go to the police station where the officers were based?

If it was kept in the Ritz, maybe. Boarding kennels on average charge up to about ten pounds a day.
