If you can find out the truth from your grandson or if he has some money to pay for the legal advice Trevor Cooper specialises in canine legal issues http://www.doglaw.co.uk/
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!
  • OP I would take legal advice - CAB might be able to help? At a minimum the police would have to prove that the dog was a threat/out of control, which would be very difficult and time consuming, and could encourage them to not pursue claims against you.

It may not be difficult or time consuming, it would require one officer to say he thought it was out of control and another one to back the first one up.

If it was only one officer then it could be trickier.

I suggest the OP gets down to the pound / police station and sorts it out f2f since the phone is obviously not getting you anywhere.

    Good luck.

The issue is not what the OP should have done. It is what the OP can do now.

If all you are going to do when you post is judge someone's actions, best not to post.

Er, whilst all this to-ing and fro-ing for CAB advice is going on, a bewildered animal is suffering because it has been separated from its (presumably) devoted owner.

The OP has plenty of time to fathom out what the police may or may not have done *after* attending to the animal's welfare.

Resolving the issue of an £800 bill would be a start -- like going to the location where the animal is being held tomorrow. And asking.
  • Good advice from both, PhylPho you're right on that front.

If the OP goes to the "pound"/RSPCA centre that has the dog, it's logical that they'd rather allow the animal to leave with the owner than hold on to it until payment is made.

It is relevant when they are querying why the bill is so high. You cannot blame someone else for something which is your own fault.

    Taking this OT a bit, but it is necessary;

This post bears absolutely no correlation whatsoever to your original post, and in fact the irony is that you've dismissed my point by proposing a new criticism of the OP.

Telling the OP that they shouldn't have done this or should have done that does not help, and in fact is just treating the OP like a child - he/she is an adult, and mistakes can be made - the OP is not posting here looking for someone to judge them, they're posting for advice on what to do going forward, so let's try and focus on that rather than berating the OP for no other apparent reason than to increase your post count.

And before any smart alec points out I'm criticising you - I'm giving you advice going forward which if taken on board should improve the experience of people such as the OP whilst using this forum.:)

Thanks for that. I was just trying to help my grandson but after some of the comments here i will not be asking for any advice about any thing again. He is going to the pound tomorrow (didn't have the address till today only a phone no and as I have already stated he couldn't get through ) He was not drunk or on drugs, if he had been he would have been arrested. Why do people think all young lads are thugs?
We will try some of the other helpful suggestions.

    What makes you say that?

The only question the OP has asked is "Is this really legal" I thought they were merely seeking clarification, as they have not asked what should now be done.
