Well I have been busy getting on with my OS living as my foot is feeling much better and I am suddenly discoving Sooooo much to do.
I have made 10lbs of seville marmalade this week and have frozen away enough Sevilles to do the same again at a later date.
I'm still making cards for the order my friend gave me. At least that is making me sit down some of the time, otherwise I would be spring cleaning and baking to restock the freezer.
Crumpet rings. I think I may have posted this before, but I culled this idea from Shirley Goode way back when. Make rings of cardboard to the desired size and encase in foil. They don't last for ever but work well until you find some/collect tuna tins.

ah well. Hello my lovely friends in here - I just know that you are real
My tip of the day, and I know this is done by all of you I'm sure, is that when I cook veg, I do it all in one pan (not potatoes though). I keep the electricity use to a minimum.

My mum has one of those pans with 3 baskets...i keep trying to sneak it out but have failed on every attempt0 -

If you can squeeze your hands down the back to reach the cracked pipe then it may be you can temporarily patch up the crack with this sort of tape. Can't guarentee it will work, but it might be worth a try.
He fixed it after i shoved all 3 laundry baskets in the bath and left it there.....kept saying i'd do it tomorrow.0 -

ballaquidsin - tuna tins for crumpet rings ! genius
true genius - i've refused to buy any ...waaay too expensive ,but it never occured to me to use tins - ive been on piklets for years.....how silly of me - how clever of youFight Back - Be Happy0 -
Dizzybuff - fab news, you clever thing:j.
lauren - thanks for the steamer and tray details. Tonight I had one pan with potatoes and in the other were carrots, broc and peas. Using one ring is obviously better than 2. Of course i was also using the oven (but the multi purpose mic one which is fast) for the b!rdseye non OS element!
Kittie - menu planning has saved me loads in time, money (no last minute dash and standing in bewilderment at the s/market) and also improves our health I think as I plan x number of fish dishes, notice if we have beef twice in a row etc. I try to plan more veggie meals which are acceptable to DH and sneak them inbetween his meatfests. Def helps keep costs down.

While we are talking soups and stews - can I throw my hat into the ring for the humble plate pie?
Cheapest one for us as big eaters is sausagement pie . . . . HM pastry case for base + lid and for the filling - half a pound of sausagemeat mixed with a reconstituted packet of (13p) Basics sage and onion stuffing mix, a couple of finely chopped onions and any other veg that need using up - just finely chop & stir together with an egg to bind it - if you have any eating apples that need using up, decore them, chop or slice leaving the skins on and add them to the top of the sausagemeat
I bake mine in a lipped tray - makes 8 very generous portions - delicious hot or cold . . . and great for pack-up
...and all for £1.50-ish!
If you find sausagement too rich - try using a cheap tin of corned beef plus chopped veggies and potatoes - still cheap but yummy:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

I really need to get the stocks up again before the next lot of price rises. Currently investigating bulk buying bread flour, rice, staples like that - I have a feeling prices are going to rocket over the next few months
With a thought to coping OS style, I noticed that A$d@ had their white bread flour at 50p per 1.5kg bag yesterday whilst I was browing mysupermarket.co as this is as cheap as paying for a cheap value loaf of processed air it is probably good sense to buy something at this price now and says on the bag British wheat, so hopefully supporting the British farmers as well in tru OS fashion by buying localish. My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
