I never said I live in poverty

Seems your reading too much into blue monkeys post

I dont dispute that some do spend money on luxury items but maximum is £30 hardly a lot. Some do have costs to pay at college books, transport.

If they have to make cuts fine cut ema, but no all of it I accept some cuts are inevitable

As much as I don't want to seem to be on the attack, the items are expensive to anybody living in poverty, and I do think its a good point on a wider scale, how many of these who claim they can't afford books without EMA have ipods, 360s, PS3s, laptops, Wii's, 40"+ TV's.

As mentioned prevously it seemed more like those with EMA had the PS2's (back when I left school) and those who didn't get it didn't have PS2's.

You call your kids, kids even when they adults, 18-19 are adults are they not?

My biggest problem with EMA, apart form ti being paid is the unfairness of its distribution.

As it is all students have no money so should all get the same treatment, you parents income should have had no effect. Your parents could earn 100k each but give you nothing yet you wouldn't get EMA.

Eitherway I am glad its gone, as with most benefits in the country it was pushing the 'have nots' into a better position than the bottom end of the 'have's', you should always be better off working and in a students case the one which works should ahve more money than the ones that don't, not work to get the same money as those that don't.

I can think of better things to do with the tax I pay, so glad its no longer being used to bribe the young out of bed, an education should be motivation enough.

It might be unfair in its distribution but is better to have kids that are further education than laying in bed or worse some may be disruptive and or a burden on society in years to come.

It also better they learn than claim benefits like income support not all students may be at home

Don't know whether anyone has watched the debate, but Burnham has done quite well, & Michael Gove has made himself look a right idiot, & struggled to cope with the debate at all.

Started off by just sitting on his 4rse, arms crossed, smug look on his face not being very bothered.

However, when ranckled struggling to debate with MP's resorts to yelling "sit down" at them. Got a wee telling off from the speaker.

Shown himself to be the muppet that he is.

Goes with being an incompetent liar...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Gove made himself a idiot last week too on Question Time

"Speaking on Question Time on Thursday night education secretary Mr Gove said: 'I hope that everyone at the BBC gets the message. I would rather see Selina Scott and Joanna Lumley on my TV screens than Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton.’ "

Last time I check neither were on BBC, the muppet trying to make himself look good

    FAO Savemoney -

Apologies for posting this here - I tried to PM you but it wouldn't let me!

I hope you don't mind me contacting you like this - I saw your comment on the EMA thread that your daughter hoped to go to uni to study forensic science.

I graduated from university in 2007 (at the time, lauded for its advanced FS department) and I am only aware of a couple of people in a graduating class of over 40 who has managed to get a job in the industry. I actually went there to do chemistry but cutbacks in the department meant at the time I felt changing my major to FS was a safer bet.

Over the last three years the major players in the private sector have merged (see Scottish FF service)
and the industry was dealt the blow at Christmas that the FSS will be winding down which means there will be 1600 employees *with experience* flooding the job market in this sector. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11989225

I hope you don't mind that I've contacted you but in hindsight I really wish I'd transferred to another university and kept on with chemistry or at a push specialised in analytical chemistry. There is definitely a bit of snobbery around the title 'forensic science' (ie its likened to 'media studies') from chemistry 'purists' in the industry even though its basically analytical chem.

If you don't mind me suggesting it - she might be better served considering more established disciplines like analytical chem and biology (if she prefers the dna side of things) and then looking at somewhere like Strathclyde's forensic program as a masters.

Anyway - again hope you don't mind that I contacted you and I hope she succeeds in whatever she chooses!

I guess the option of getting a job is just not considered anymore?

EMA was first introduced when I was at school (I live in Scotland so school at 17/18 is normal) and a few of my friends received it due to having parents who were split up etc, but we all had jobs too!

So I worked part time and got my wages, but friend A who also worked part time would get EMA and her wages? and because she lived with her mum, her dad who had a good job would also subsidise her weekends/partying etc.

Labour Government and there well thought out policies, Bravo Blair and Brown.

I also felt in the school I went to people who would not have considered Highers/A Levels stayed on just because of the money, but weren't actually doing anything to further there education.

It isn't just attendance. Behaviour, discipline & keeping up with workload are all taken into account. Fail on any and you won't get your ema.

Yep, that as well....brain had gone into meltdown after getting my TMA done this morning :rotfl:

I don't have that worry with eldest (probably why I forgot about it) as he has just been made a prefect, thus meets all the above already plus extra.

Re courses for adults, as you are probably aware, I have undertaken a fair few but all have been with the aim and targeted for, improving my employment chances.

For example, the ECDL was because the education authority were asking for one as an essential to apply for admin based vacancies, the counselling course because I would be working with (and was at the time volunteering with) youngsters and of course, my current degree for my longer term prospects once the boys are off my hands (she says with her fingers crossed firmly :D) and I can return to my old sector but more specialised, full time.

I don't have all my fees paid for, partly my own fault because I am in a hurry to get my degree so am doubling up...which of course means I exceed the allowance given per year, so any excess, I have to meet from my own pocket.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
