Nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that the person could be committing fraud. If the OP hadn't said she was the NRPP I wonder if she would have been treated differently, some how I think so!

Yes, I was wondering why everyone is so sure this isn't fraud, when in similar threads with similar circumstances everyone is sure it is fraud!

And it's odd that people think the OP is jealous - why would anyone be jealous that the partner's ex had found someone else? Most people would be glad that their partner's ex is no longer on the market!

I suggest the OP rings TCO and tells them what she knows. If they say it isn't fraud, no harm done.
  • Thank you to all those who offered good advice. As I said, we won't actually be reporting the person in question - it was more a "wondering" we had about the legalities of the situation.

Given the unstable nature of some of the contributors to this thread, I won't elaborate further on private matters. However, I will say that if those who felt a need to cast aspersions on our family situation were fully informed of all the facts surrounding the matter, I am certain their opinions would be very different. In the meantime, I'll leave them to get back to their Daily Mails.

Just to play devil's advocate and turn this the other way around for example if the OP had posted this:

I am a single parent who works and claims WTC, I have a partner who stays with me 5 nights out of the week are we classed as LTAHAW for benefit purposes eg WTC and council tax benefit.
My partner doesn't give me any money and he has his own house which he pays the mortgage and council tax there.

I could stake a good bet those scolding the OP would be darn quick to say that the above situation was indeed committing fraud ;)

TCO certainly will be interested if she has a "partner" but is claiming tax credits as a single parent. Just as interested as the DWP would be if she was claiming benefits.

Erm.....why? I have a "partner". We don't live together, he has his own property, I have mine.....I spend one night a week at his and he spends one night a week at mine. We are not financially linked in any way shape or form. I claim Tax Credits as a single parent. Am I to assume you think I'm committing fraud??
  • Don't mean to be rude but think the OP should get on with her own life. "Reporting" the ex will only result in bad feeling all round - surely the last thing the children involved need?

Re - read the OP he stays there five nights per week not one.

I have read the thread. Zagfles comment refers specifically to the "TCO certainly being interested if she has a "Partner" but claiming Tax Credits as a single parent". This appears to be in reference to the OP having a "partner" as opposed to the amount of nights that partner stays over.

And I have a dance partner. And a business partner. I don't share my tax credits claim with either! Am I committing fraud ;)

The clue is in the use of quotes around "partner" - implying a specific definition. As I was referring to TCO & DWP being interested - it's fairly obvious I was referring to their definition of "partner".

Perhaps you should choose your wording a little more carefully in future to avoid any ambiguity.

    Yes, or how about:

My girlfriend is a single mother getting £1,000 a month in benefits. Will it affect her benefits if I stay over 5 nights a week?
