DILEMMA - Need advice on a Renault Megane for a young driver
Hello all,
I am looking for a car for my son, and hes got about £2000-£2700 to spend on one.
Hes been looking at the Megane 1.4 (2002-2004 reg ish).
The 1.4's seem to be a little more expensive than the 1.6 megane, but the 1.4's are cheaper on the insurance, for an 18 year old male.
I was wondering what I should expect (milage etc...) for arund my price range, and if they are a good car or not?
Also, is there something wrong with the 1.6, or more faults, which is why its cheaper?
Regards, Arlette

What insurance quotes are you getting for the two?0

Thanks for the reply, for the
1.4 - £2,098.35
1.6 - £2,330.68
Thats TPFT and my his own insurance, with me as a named driver on
That's a good price nowadays.
Is fully comp much dearer?
There's probably not much in it at that sort of age, I would be wary a change in model spec could affect the insurance price, so tbh find a decent car first, then check that particular one.0 -

Fully comp pushes the price right up. I was wondering if aybody ha had any experience with the Meganes and if theyve had any problems?

direct qoute with a particular insurer or compare site?
T.P
T.P.F.T
usually work out dear for some reason.
full comp does but not always work out dearer.
pass plus, thatchem catagorised security, mature named driver, drive or garage, brings policy qoutes down.
going direct to insurers not compare sites give you accurate quotes.
plus theres insurers who dont get involved in compare sites who youlll miss getting quotes from.
is a megane all he is looking at? renaults not my favourate and i dont class any of their cars "good" at all.
my bro in law has a megane cab 1.6 nothing but trouble, a neighbour has a laguna 3 infact 1 his daily use 2 others as donors for parts and i am not kidding you.0 -
Can only speak from personal experience, I have a "W" reg Megane 1.6 Sport that I have had since it was 2 years old and had no problems at all. Prior to that had a Megane 1.6 that I claim saved my life when I hit a patch of diesel on a wet motorway and was thrown across the two lanes of the slip road hitting the barriers on both sides and taking an emergency phone box a few yards down the road, car was a write off but I was only bruised.0

Only ever worked on one, Rear brakes had seized solid.
Cheap & tinny panels. Makes the light & good on fuel though.
For a 2004 model i would be looking at spending around £1500 nowhere near 2500...
2005 models available for under £2000, From traders as well not private. I would expect to get a 2005 for £1500
private and 2004 for just over £1000.

It'll be because there are enough idiots out there who just assume the 1.4 will be better on fuel.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

If it were me I'd get the 1.6 and pay the extra £200, but for no reason other than wanting the most powerful car I could afford.Having said that I wouldn't get a Megane; french and prone to electrical faults. Look at something like an Astra maybe?

Thankyou for all the replies, he is set on a Megane for some reason, hes got a 206 at the moment and the megane is coming out a bit cheaper on the megane at the moment. Hes 6 4 height and i dio agree with him that the 206 is titchy for him but i dont want him to spend all his hard earned cash on a megane if they are rubbish. Is there any other type of car that i could suggest to him, hopefully he will have his years no claims in march and hopefully the insurance will come down to about 2000 this year as last year we paid 2651 with ikube but i do agree with him that its really restricting having to be home at 11pm. I still have to get taxis home from the pub lol , thanks again for all the advice.0
