DILEMMA - Need advice on a Renault Megane for a young driver

^^ I would suggest a bigger car, something Vectra or Mondeo size. Big cars are very cheap compared to the same age small car and the equipment you get as standard is much better.
Those with any sense will buy the bigger cars, the money saved over a small car will more than pay for the extra fuel/tax.
Those who simply don't want to use their brains, they just listen to other brainless people.
The insurance? well they're just cashing in on the small car owners, because they never bother to check whether a larger car would be cheap to insure.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

The mk2 meganes from around 02 to 04 were beset with a load of gremlins, hopefully they should be sorted by now.
I also thought the mk1 megane had a better reputation for reliability than the early mk11's. Maybe on of the last mk1cars from 02 would be a better bet, and may be cheaper on ins?
We have a family of meganes, 04, 55 and 07. No issues to speak off but they are all diesels.
Just another thought. The megane hatch (mines an estate;)), was allways marketed as a girly car. Can your 6'4" alpha male offspring live with that when his mates get hold of him,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
French cars aint the best in my experience...
Try get something Japanese, bullet proof engines
Maybe something like a Yaris (surprisingly roomy!), Micra, will fall into low insurance groups too. Or even an older Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Could also opt for an older VW Golf?0 -
Thankyou for all the replies, he is set on a Megane for some reason, hes got a 206 at the moment and the megane is coming out a bit cheaper on the megane at the moment. Hes 6 4 height and i dio agree with him that the 206 is titchy for him but i dont want him to spend all his hard earned cash on a megane if they are rubbish. Is there any other type of car that i could suggest to him, hopefully he will have his years no claims in march and hopefully the insurance will come down to about 2000 this year as last year we paid 2651 with ikube but i do agree with him that its really restricting having to be home at 11pm. I still have to get taxis home from the pub lol , thanks again for all the advice.
Not got the 1.1 206 has he?0 -
megane is not much bigger than the 206! inside and out.0

Yes hes got the 206 1.1 now and i was crying when i paid the insurance on it as it had gone up 500 for a newer model.0

Someone mentioned Japanese, and I have a 2004 Honda Civic, which despite it's tiny exterior, is enormous inside. I am 6"2 and when i have my seat set up for me i can still sit behind myself.
However they dont look cool (apart from the type r and type s) and for a 2004 model i think you'll be looking about £3000. but double check auto trader, it's a great car. My 1.7 diesel is good on insurance0 -
Thanks for that wba31, the cool factor does come into it a lot being 18 but he hasnt got the money to be "cool" yet lol, i suggested a skoda as they are less on insurance than a lot of cars but hes having none of that. Its really hard trying to get somthing half decent with a couple of grand when the insurance is so high. I thought as hes got a years no claims more companies would quote but they arnt. I think he will be getting a push bike at this rate lmao .0

Is he offering the 206 in part ex? does that count towards the value you are looking at.
I passed at 19, and drove £100 Nissan Micra's for a few years. I then bought myself a 7 year old VW Bora, I then got a 5 year old Honda Accord (which was very cool for a 25 year old) and have downsized to the Civic as the wife to be couldnt drive the Accord for it being too big... I'm a big Honda fan following the 2 I've owned, and despite me never wanting to sell my Accord, my Civic is a great little car0
