u can choose to keep on having more kids!0

When my children were small I worked 4pm to midnight shift in the local factory while hubby looked after the kids (after he had been in work all day). I would finish at midnight, cycle home and be in bed by 1am (with a sleepless baby). Up at 7am to take the oldest two to school, look after baby all day and do the housework etc., pick the kids up at 3.15, before leaving for work again at 3.45 to do it all again.
It really wasn't ideal but it was our only option as the mortgage interest rate was 16% and we couldn't afford to live on one wage. You do what you have to do!0 -
Before tax credits, hubby used to work 8.30-5, pick me up and take me in to work till 11pm. The kids had to stay up as we lived in the country with no public transport. Didn't do them any harm.0

Before tax credits there was the married mans tax allowance. Same thing different name.0 -
If the husband is working full time and the children are only 4 and 2, surely they'll be in bed within a couple of hours of his return from work?0

Yes and that was why it was unfair - why should stay at home parents be penalised for not earning0 -

If you weren't working, you got premiums within benefits for children.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I don't know a lot about it (before my time
), but have had a quick read of this and I agree with you, the relief granted by the married couple's allowance is negligible compared to TCs. Gone ... or have I?0 -
tax credits are more because the cost of living is higher and houses are 10 X salary. When the married mans allowance was in, houses were 3 X salary, jobs were plentiful. and you only needed one wage to live comfortably. And it wasn't just given if you were earning, the allowance was per household and usually the wife didn't work in those days, but the "household" still got the allowance.0
