Is this another wind-up? If not, then it sounds to me that the dog was from a rescue, said dog has been taken back to rescue and rescue, who have the right to do so, are refusing to release the dog again.

:mad: Sorry you tell my kids this is a wind up!!!:mad:

To the helpful people, it appears that my wife did sign something when she took the dog but my mother in law doesnt know what it was ( yeah right).

And as I cannot get this confirmed by my wife who seems to have disappreared off the face of the earth, it looks like she signed him away. (classy NOT!!)

Don't take it personally, Hethmar is genuine it's just that lots of people come on this forum start a thread asking for advice sometimes they are about strange/conflicting scenarios and people bother to answer give advice and quite often the original poster either is just a wind up merchant or never comes back .......which naturally winds people up ;)

Hope you get your doggie back :)
  • Is the dog chipped/tattooed in your name? or have your name on the registration? if so, report it to the police as theft. It is regardless then if any paperwork was signed. If the dog was not chipped/tattooed, then I'm afraid it could be tricky getting your dog back
Just bumbling along, trying to save some money
Couldn't do it without coming here every day ;)

As a last resort, you could go to where the dog has been taken and adopt him again yourself?

We didnt have it chipped but I am sure he was done before he was handed over.

The only thing I know is the lady who has him will not deal with me as I didnt sign the papers, I only paid for it?!

Have you spoken to the person with the dog directly, or is all your information coming second hand from other people? I would suggest that the first thing you need to do is talk to them directly and calmly, explaining the situation from your perspective. Without getting cross and demanding your rights, as they need to know you are a good owner not Mr Angry (even if that's how you feel.)
Find out exactly what your wife has told them, and what she has/hasn't signed. Are they friends of hers and playing games, or are they genuinely concerned about the state of the dog?
TBH if I were them, and depending on what they've been told, I'd be worried about giving a dog back to someone who can't make their mind up if they want it or not. That may not have been your intention, but to an outsider that may well be how it looks.
So you need to be the calm responsible owner who wants the best for the dog and can show you've been doing and will continue to do so. And that the dog isn't going to be sent from pillar to post in the battle between you and your wife.
Then if that doesn't work, you'll have more idea of where you stand and if there's any further action you can take.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I was about to say something similar.

As Elsien just said too, it is worth speaking to tose who have your dog at the moment and explaining the situation nice and calmly. Explain that you really want to keep the dog (by re-adopting it and signing papers yourself if needs be) and that you can provide a good home for it where it will get everything it needs, food, water, the time he needs, love, exercise, toys, play, familiarity, etc. If there is anything you can give her to prove you are a responsible dog owner, take that with you, e.g. reference from your vet or groomer or anyone else has had dealings or care of your dog, proof he is neutered/microchipped/etc. If she is concerned that the dog has bitten, a vet reference stating that he is normally very good to handle and that it was completely out of character and due to the dog feeling threatened many help. It may also help if you can agree to sign a training contract with the rescue. I know a lot of rescues use these.

I hope you are able to get your boy back. It's clear you miss him. Good luck.

You need to have a regular routine, settled home life(dog also) & be able to cope with a dog now that you are "single". To the rescue centre, the person that signed for the dog, is it's new owner & can give it back whenever. Would the rescue centre have let you adopt the dog in the first place without your mrs? Would it allow either of you to adopt now that your going through an unsettled time? As for everyone else involved ,kids, inlaws etc don't count to the rescue centre, their concern is,& should be only with their animals. Not sure anyone could commit 100% to animals when there is such a big turmoil going on.
