    Hi all :)

Awwwwwww :) Thanks for your concerns, PMs and replies in 'The Arms' :D

Yes its been a tough time and is likely to continue to be so I am trying to find ways of coping. Been in pieces since Thurs and have been suffering dreadful daily headaches as a result :(

Thank goodness the days are getting longer now and we are having more sunny days - The SAD means that on dark, damp days I barely cope at all so ROLL ON SPRING!!!

Having been made redundant just before Christmas, I have really enjoyed my time at home, batch cooking, chilling out.....My freezers are bursting with home made food.

I actually now have a smile on my face all the time now knowing that I can survive without all the stress of working a long week.

I have seeds growing, ready to plant on once the weather warms up....been a long time since i had the energy to plant seeds due to work commitments.

The sun is shining more each day and I can't wait to get out in the garden.

I am contemplating getting hens for eggs too..need to do some more research though.

I am loving life...oh...and recently found out that I am going to be a "Granny"......am too young to be a granny....maybe Nanny/Nana sounds better?

Spring came early here yesterday, I cleaned my bathroom from top to bottom, even nooks and crannies I didn't know I had!
The rust forming on the chrome shower rail is now gone :j and all those irritating bits of shampoo and conditioner (DD seems to leave the last 1" then start a new bottle:mad:) have been combined into 1 bottle.

Will also need to look at clothes. I have not bought any new clothes for a few years, so will look at alterations and repairs that need doing, along with the 'I haven't worn it for 2 years I'm not going to' clear out.
I really do dress by the 80/20 rule.

I am sooooo looking forward to putting away thermals and jumpers, roll on spring :D

WE cleared soem rubbish from our back yard (carpet taken up in oct and dread christmas tree - the shame!!) this weekend. Finished chopping the last of the wood - should see us through chilly spring evenings when the heating is off. Freecycled old garden furniture and gettign some new this year

This week I'm reading my veg book and planning what I can grow this summer - gonna mainly do salads and 'expensive veg' like beans and beans as very little space and stick to getting spuds and onions in sacks.

  • I am worrying that I won't be ready in time for when spring really kicks off. Despite it just been too cold and wet to get in the garden I know that my hydrangers are budding, and so is the mahonia and both them and the 2 huge buddlehias we have need a good cut down.

I have packets and packets of seeds ready to plant - My MIL has asked for one of those mini greenhouses for her birthday (replace the one she has that has been killed by the winter) I think I will get one too. I have also got 3 huge planters that I am planning on using for spuds.

The yard needs a good pressure wash, and the raised borders need sorting out new walls (tho we live in a rented house so not sure how much I can do here).

So much I want to do - but this last year of Uni is gonna be a hard one and I really am not sure what time I am gonna have for gardening.

I have taken the mattress topper off the bed and changed the curtains at the patio windows for lighter ones. The nights are getting shorter and the kids actually want to be out playing.

As it is half term this week I am hoping to start the spring cleaning. I like the house to look all clean and sparkly to welcome in the spring. My favourite times of the year are autumn and spring. I just love the freshness of spring - the early sunshine, lighter morings and evenings and the colours - yellow, white and the light green shoots and buds. I also like autumn - the reds, golds and oranges. Winter and summer just don't appeal so much. Have a lovely week everyone.

Thanks PW for linking to this thread. I was only thinking about it the other day but I am hopeless at finding old threads :o

Thanks to everyone who asked how I was doing when I went AWOL. Quick update for those who followed this thread - Very sadly, I lost my Dad last summer - I always expected him to get thru to the winter but it wasn't meant to be :(

    Back to Preparing for Spring...

LINKY The site that I use to tell me what to sow now. Hope its useful for someone. Also, I use Alan Romans for seeds - much, much cheaper than others and no difference in quality. Ald! are doing seeds even cheaper this year so I might have to get a few more :o

Although I will wait this year until mid/end feb for most early sowings as we are away for a while and DS will forget to look after them when he housesits! Also, I always get straggly seedlings which are too weak to grow on if I sow lettuce on the windowsill in Jan, even tho its south facing... Does anybody else have this problem?

I am preparing to raise some chicks this year!! Again, nothing will happen with regards to that until end Feb but I am enjoying the planning!

No way can I Spring Clean until I have Winter DeCluttered and that is a very slow work in progress... In fact it seems to be getting worse not better  :D

Nice to see this thread back Frugal and so sorry to hear abour your Dad, I knew that you were going through a very difficult time last year and didn't like to ask... big hugs coming your way.:)
This thread is becoming one of those welcome signs of Spring, like those first little snowdrops that peep through underneath the trees while it's still so cold but just gives us that little boost 'cos we know that we're on our way!
Part of my preparing for Spring is deciding what plants to grow and which seeds to buy this year. I started a compost heap last summer and am actually excited to see how it's progressed through the Winter. How sad is that? I've just been adding to the top of it and the day that I take the cover off and turn it over will be a red letter day for me!
(Aldi have their seeds in this Thursday for 39p a packet for anyone else who is seed buying :) )

    Yay! Somebody resurrected this thread!

It is about time we started thinking about Spring and the pleasures that come with it!

Feb/March is a great time to start sowing seeds, esp salads, ready for summer.

I posted a link a few posts back for what to sow in Feb...

This year I am planning on growing all our own salad leaves, mini cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes and perhaps other things too.

Main projects for prepping for Spring are:
Clear the rubbish that has accumulated in the garden from feeding the chickens (foil trays of leftovers and dirty drinkers)

    Cut back the hedging

Dig up and move a badly placed (by me) hebe bush which is doing very well - I hope it survives the move :/

Re-seed the huge patches of lawn that the chickens have ruined <sigh>

Clear up the cat shat that the local beasts have dumped in the scratched up dead grass

Clear the patio and make it useable again!

Lots of work but always nice to get out when the weather improves :)
