Did you buy a steam or microwave steriliser?

Options
We have looked at the Tommy Tipee closer to nature range (got 6 bottles in Asda).

Do you think steam or microwave steriliser is best?

I think steam at home & a bottle of milton round mine to be used in an emergency?

Mothercare do a nice black one called the Pod, would fit in well in a kitchen. Better than the white ones.

Anyone used the Tommy Tippee or the Pod?

Not sure how to put this delicately, but it's very early to be thinking about all this!

I have a microwave steriliser at home (came with my BreastFlow bottle set from Amazon). When I'm out and about I take medela steam bags with me which go in the microwave. Very easy indeed. Can't bear the smell of milton. Once I just scalded the stuff with boiling water as there was no microwave and nothing else, and as I express my baby's milk she wouldn't have eaten anything if I hadn't. She was fine.

She's now 14 weeks old and never had any illness.

I wouldn't panic about this stuff now to be honest. You'll be a nervous wreck by July! ;)

She's had the 12 wk scan & tests, all is well.

There is a lot to buy for July & its the end January now.

This is MSE after all & its sensible to decide what products you need then buy them as they come up at good prices.

I'm not panicking at all, shopping doesn't make me panic.

Im planning on buying an electric steralizer as I've got nowhere to put a microwave one when Im using the microwave IYSWIM - at least with the electric one (I love the POD but need to check if all bottles fit in it!) you keep it in one place and it can be used as and when is necessary.

Edit: My sister had the Tommee Tippee Microwave steralizer but forgot about it and melted all the teats!

Your daughter is due 3 days before me - have you joined the Asda Baby club to get a free huggies pack? http://babyclub.asda.com/register I claimed mine on the weekend - they are kept in the nappy aisle and are reduced atm to £3 but the coupon takes £5 off your bill.

  • I burn myself with the micro steriliser every time. I used an Avent electric. Bottles stay sterile for hours left in.

  • For the last few weeks I've been staying with my sister who gave birth about a month ago, and after doing most of the sterilising/bottle preparing I've become a bit of an expert!!!

She has the tommee tippee bottles, and a POD steriliser from Mothercare. The bottles are great - she started using the Avent bottles but baby didn't seem to like the teats, so changed to tommee tippee which suit her much better (apparently the teats are more 'nipple-shaped'). she originally started on the size 1 teats, but as she is using aptamil formula these teats were getting blocked (a common problem apparently if you google it!) so changed to the variable flow teats and these work brilliantly. she is quite a greedy baby though!

The POD is great in some respects - just fill it with bottles, teats etc, pour some water in, switch on - takes 6 minutes, and bottles stay sterile for 6 hours if lid is left on. However, although it is designed to hold 6 bottles, it only takes 3 of the tommee tippee ones because they are quite wide and so they won't stand up properly if you put 6 in.

So i would recommend the pod if you're happy to just make 3 bottles at a time, as we did (you're not supposed to make up bottles far in advance anyway so it's not a problem), but if not you may have to look into a different make.

Oh, I get that (and I'd never question your shopping abilities! :rotfl:). I didn't pay full price for anything (I never do). But I didn't buy much before 20 weeks. Just as well because there's so much the scans and tets can't tell you - you don't know till baby arrives.

Mine was way longer than average, meaning I had to cut the feet off her first babygros. She hates the feeling of being wet, so the reusable nappies I thought she'd love don't get used very often as they don't "lock away" the moisture and she gets narky. She hated dummies (she's a thumb sucker), and is a very hot baby. She's only worn a vest and a babygro twice (on a visit to Yorkshire) even when we were out walking in her pram (she would wear a hooded cardigan but that's it). She hates hats and gloves, and only tolerated a snowsuit when we actually put her in the snow in it. So I have a wardrobe full of vests, hats and gloves (and 3 snowsuits) that were given to us that she will never use! I hate the waste that represents!

IMHO you're best off getting very little before baby actually arrives. They don't actually need very much at all anyway ;)
