This makes interesting reading for anyone on ADSL and not getting 8Mb.
I'm with Telewest, it's not the best for TV and phones, but the broadband service is unbeatable.
Am dreading a performance drop when NTL/Virgin start to get their greedy mits on it all though.

Are you sure you're supposed to be getting "up to 8 mb" ?

My documentation from Talk Talk says it won't happen until there's a network changeover in May 2007.

That is most likely when your exchange is planned to be unbundled (LLU).

  • BT speedtester seems to to be down for a major upgrade at the moment.

I like the following tester that allows you to rate your ISP:

Unfortunately that tester is so overused its probably way out.
  • just checked speeds as suggested and linked through to all deals on offer at my postcode. Was on AOL gold at 24.99 and after one three minute call asking for MAC code I am now on Silver at 9.99 a month rather than advertised £17.99 150 quid saving for three minute call. Superb

We are on NTL 4mb/s service and after several speed checks over the last few months, it is pretty close to (sometimes over) these speeds all the time. So if your isp does get bought out it might not be as bad as you expect. I have also had reasonable customer service from them with trouble shooting in the beginning when I was really thick, all be it on a premium rate number.

    Zdnet link worked a treat
I will keep obs on my speed from now on

My Broadband has just been upgraded yesterday to 8 meg but only seem to get 5, does it take a couple of days for the new speed to settle down or is it straight away?
