Something I find interesting is although I am supposed to be on an up to 8mb connection this can vary from 1mb to 6.5mb
  • I've found this one to be the best, not a conventional speed test.
This one will give you your IP Profile (BRAS Profile), Router stats and download speed. You need to put in your tel no, and your user name that you put into your router which your isp gave you. Keeping trying because it can be very slow and gives errors.
    http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/
    or
    http://test.speedtester.bt.com:

The performance tester will initially check your Broadband connection through to your ISP.
    Important:
What you router syncs at, gives you your IP Profile which in turn gives you your download speed.

    SYNC rate IP Profile (BRAS)
    288 - 575 250 Kbps
    576 - 1151 500 Kbps
    1152 - 1727 1.0 Mbps
    1728 - 2271 1.5 Mbps
    2272 - 2847 2 Mbps
    2848 - 3423 2.5 Mbps
    3424 - 3999 3.0 Mbps
    4000 - 4543 3.5 Mbps
    4544 - 5119 4.0 Mbps
    5120 - 5695 4.5 Mbps
    5696 - 6239 5.0 Mbps
    6240 - 6815 5.5 Mbps
6816 - 7391 6.0 Mbps This is mine My router syncs at 7163
    7392 - 7967 6.5 Mbps
    7968 - 8127 7.0 Mbps
    8128 7.15 Mbps
Note: If you router re-syncs at a higher rate then you have to wait for 3 days for your IP Profile to be reset, if you synch at a lower rate your profile goes down straight away.

This is true accurate test of what your getting from your isp, if your download speed does not reflect your synch/IP Profile then you can certaintly use this test as proof when you complain to your isp.

on 2meg with telewest and test showed 2058kb.
I refused their 4mb free uprade earlier in the year and told them I wanted a cheaper price instead. I was still on £25 per mth 1mb up till then. Now its £17.99 pmth and about the only Telewest service I'm happy with.
    ;) debt free...yippee

Its like buying a dozen eggs from Tesco and only getting 5.

It's only like buying eggs from Tesco assuming the egg box says "This is a box of eggs, it may contain a dozen eggs however we cannot guarantee this and there may be any number up to 12". Which is basically what all of the terms and conditions say for any ISP offering the BTMax service.

For everyone - it really is worth checking internal wiring. I have a Bulldog 16Mb line, if I plug my modem in on the extension in my spare room I get 12Mb, if I plug it in downstairs I get 16.3Mb.

this is one that Tiscali always refer their customers to when they get connection speed related queries.

not sure, but should work with other broadband providers too.

I always find it to be accurate

I appreciate your logic and agree, however if it is your wiring causing the speed drop is it their fault?

Also, most ISPs are charging you the same amount as a 2Mb or even 1Mb connection used to cost but giving you "up to 8Mb" so they are giving you something for no extra money. Some people are getting more "extra" than others.

Hi I regularly check my Broadband speed using all of these servces, I am on Talk talk, although they promise up to 8 meg, I never get more than 2, and I live in a city centre!!!
Basically I have been ripped off, and there seems to be very little I can do about it, any ideas?

    Thanks

Not an expert on this - but I thought Talk Talk you can only get "up to" 8mb if you are conneccted to an exchange that has been unbundled by them, otherwise it is the standard BT 2mb. Have a look at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ to see if your exchange has been unbundled for TalkTalk (Carphone Warehouse).

    Good luck

  • Are you sure you're supposed to be getting "up to 8 mb" ?

My documentation from Talk Talk says it won't happen until there's a network changeover in May 2007.
