I think i'm being properly ripped off then, i live in a city (sadly) so must be close to a descent exchange and yet on my max 8mb line i am currently getting
426Kb/s download
25Kb/s Upload
Ok so it may be 11:50 in the morning, but i would still expect better than that

I am a newbie here. Would like to contribute in my first post. I highly recommend a SIMPLE speed test webpage which I have been using quite a lot! The URL is: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/speedtest.html
And you'd need to click 'here' to repeat the test once you have opened the page. coz the first time the page is loaded does not give you the right speed. I've tested it a lot, and the given data are reliable in my opinion. The most important advantage is it's quite simple and fast. Not like others, looks professional but complicated. Hope somebody would like this.0 -
Everyone should remember that their equipment plays a vital role in speed tests. For example, we get our broadband through our NTL set-top box, and although we were automatically upgraded to 10meg earlier this year, the STB can only cope with a maximum of 5meg. To date, we've only been getting 3meg, but today I just checked and it's 5meg, so it looks like if I pay £50 for the cable modem (or get rid of digital TV) I'll probably start getting the service I pay for...0

Speeds on Telewest/NTL should be the same or close to what you pay for, as they are actually selling this speed, obviously equipment will make a difference to the maximum speed you can get.
ADSL suppliers only supply an upto speed, so it's not guaranteed, unlike TW/NTL.2014 running challenge 587.4 miles / 250 miles0 -
Just remember that if you dont have a dedicated cable modem and you use something like Tesco which utilises a homes telephone line via BT its always worth phoning BT and asking them to boost the Gane on the line.
If using a dedicated modem like Telewest its always worth remembering it may fluctuate due to how many are online and where you are from the exchange.
If you have a surfboard modem their testing page is here http://192.168.100.1/signal.html dont change any settings tho its just to see on the signal page what the Power Level is and it should be between 0 -10 db for a good signal if its way out I would contact the supplier.
Also the samknows website is about 6mths out of date, if you want to check if you can get BroadBand in your area phone the supplier you wish to go with.0 -
I am with talktalk and they tried to charge me more for less than 8 meg broadband-I asked if they were having a laugh! After numerous complaints and waiting in queues forever didn't even get a discount-if you haven't signed up -STAY AWAY0

the product name says it all..
Up TO 8mb
the important part being "up to"
And as for the bloke who said "I live in a city centre" why would you expect this to give you better speeds?
You are more likley to suffer from contention than the likes of me who shares my exchange with about 300 people instead of 300000 -
They are useful for getting a general idea, our uni internet connection felt slow to me (it's supposed to be 4mbit/s from Telewest) so after troubleshooting all our hardware here and running the speedtests at various times over a week I was getting results between 100kbit - 1mbit, having approached Telewest they have identified network capacity problems in the area.
Unfortunately they cannot give me a date they hope/aim to resolve it by, nor will they offer any compensation until it's fixed. They're also charging us more than was agreed in the first place so I'm waiting on a reply to a stern letter they should've received yesterday.:p0 -
All tooooo hi-tech for me i am afraid, i am a normal 58 year old who has to get a 10 year old to play a film on a dbd player!! But i am still going to sue my bank for just shy of two grand!!HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!0
