Try to leave Talktalk and get charged £85

I'm also an ex-tiscali customer who was taken over by talk talk. Worse thing that ever happened, had no end of problems after the changeover after years of troublefree service from tiscali.
I left and went to Plusnet, as they are owned by BT you can go back for free, and so far I've been very happy with them.
Just one word of warning - if you are cancelling a contract put it in writing - I didn't and they are trying to charge me £386 for 18 months. Luckily I have the reference I was given when I cancelled it on the phone within the 7 day cooling off period, so if they want to take me to court for it I'm well prepared. A letter sent recorded would have saved all the hassle though. You live and learn!Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
While scouring the internet for info I found this

It seems that Talktalk have won the Daily Mail award for worst customer service. If I leave I will definitely put it in writing. Thanks for the suggestion. I will also look into a 'back to donor' BT line.0 -
I called BT and found that they do charge £30, it's not free, and I'd have to commit to 12 months. FOr some reason they don't match the internet advertised rates unless I pay a year's line rental upfront.
Looks like I may be staying with talktalk at this rate.0 -

This is not correct, if the line originated with BT and you ask for a return to donor then there is no charge-but a 12m line rental contract is required as previously advised. You are confusing a new connection with an RTD. Assuming that you want to retain your number, you need to ask for an RTD.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

i beleive macman is correct,
I have just this weekend began to go back to Bt ( where i originated from ) , connection fee cost = £0 , but a 12 month contract , once with Bt then you can choose a multitude of BB suppliers
The way i looked at it , once with Bt, it gives you alot more "choice" in the market without getting a charge to move elswhere !!0 -
But the downside of this is that you will have a 10-14 days break in your broadband service.
Some reports indicate that you can go from XYZ LLU to Sky LLU directly. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I had a similar problem when I left virgin broadband just before xmas, they added 23.50 to my final bill as a disconnection fee.
I rang them and queried it and, after a bit of a discussion the waived it.0 -
Believe me it would be worth paying BT the £30 to leave TalkTalk.0

I spoke to O2 again this evening and now they are saying it will cost £45 not £85. I'm confused, none of this is in writing. If it's £45 I will go through with it because there's 3 months free Broadband and cashback in the deal, which makes it worthwhile.
In the meantime I'll call BT again and try the Back to Donor route just in case. The woman I spoke to didn't mention it. She said I would need a new line.
I don't understand why if I had a BT line originally.0
