Try to leave Talktalk and get charged £85

I am with Talktalk and recently signed up to O2 Broadband and home phone, to take advantage of slightly cheaper monthly costs plus a 3 month free broadband offer, so effectively saving £30 a year plus cashback of £30 for new customers. All was going well with the initial set up, waiting for connection to begin a week or so. I called O2 to check on something and incidentally discovered they are going to charge £85 to 'install' a line. I expected a £45 charge mentioned in the small print to 'upgrade' my line, but not £85.

Has anyone else discovered this when trying to leave Talktalk? Apparently Talktalk have their own line type and if you leave you have to pay any other new provider £85 to reinstall the BT line? If it's BT it's £125!!

Any way round this? Will I have to be a customer of Talktalk for the rest of my days?

Thanks.

  • I have just left tiscali/talk/talk moved to BT free line.
  • So when O2 told me that BT charge £125 to restore the line they were wrong- basically if I sign up to a BT year phone package they will only charge £30 from what I can tell?

Thing is I don't really want to have to sign up with BT....they dont seem to offer good value.
  • I left TalkTalk (had line rental with them as well) and went to BT and was not charged any fee. Fingerbob7 are you sure you were not still under contract with TT.
  • Yes, Shortchanged, I've been with them for 2 years, so my contract is up. I can't find out on the BT site whether they still do free connection, it seems to be £30. Out of interest who is your broadband supplier?

    Thanks.
  • I contacted BT and there is a £30 fee.

BT provide my broadband and phone.
  • I see, in that case they do offer free connection. But the downside is a more expensive rate and a commitment of at least 12-18 months. I wish there were another better value solution to leaving Talktalk- anyone?

For people who are not on the fastest exchange, like myself, the prices of BB and phone have gone up considerably over the past few years as the competition has been gobbled up.

I was actually a perfectly happy Tiscali customer until TT consumed them. Then TT wanted to downgrade my package and charge me more hence I then left. not that I really needed an excuse anyway, it was just the other offers from companies were not great.

If you go back to BT on a 'return to donor' then there is no charge at all, but you have to take 12m line rental.
The £125 BT charge or £85 02 charge is for provisioning a new line-not 'restoring' an old one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

leaving talktalk post interested me. talktalk have just advised me they are upgrading - for free! - my package originally via tiscali. it's not an upgrade as far as I can see it's a downgrade, I'm not getting 'anytime' calls just evenings/weekends and other talktalk customers. have told them I don't want it but awaiting their reply. probably don't get a choice, other than leaving. anyone have any thoughts on this? thanks
