Yes, you can taste the tahini slightly, although all the flavours kind of merge together :)

Sharra, can I ask, do you freeze them after cooking or before? ta for posting the recipe!

  • My easy bean burger recipe is to
fry a small onion till it is just getting soft,
add a clove of garlic and fry for a couple of minutes more.
Add this to some kidney beans that have been mashed up (I use a drained tin of value ones, when I am in a hurry, to give you an idea of the amount)
Then I add some soy sauce and a big handful of porridge oats
If you leave the mixture for a little while the oats soak up any excess liquid and make for a lovely firm mixture.
This mixture is easy to mould into burger shapes - I generally get about 6 burgers out of it using a burger press - I cook 2 at a time (in the oven or gently fry for a few minutes on each side) and freeze the rest.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with any other beans that you wanted to use.

I made up a recipe for spicy bean burgers which I and my boyfriend really like (even though he's a meat eater).

(makes 4 medium sized burgers which is usually enough for me and my boyfriend with some homemade potato wedges and salad, so double up if you want to serve more)

-Fry half a finely chopped onion in olive oil
-Open and drain (but not fully, leave a tiny bit of liquid) a can of mixed beans and put in a bowl
-Add the onion, some tomato purree (a good squirt!) and some spices (I usually use about 1-2tsp cumin, 1-2tsp corriander, 1/2 tsp garlic salt, 1/2 tsp hot chilli pepper) and mix and mash with a potato masher.
-Add plain flour until the mixture is no longer sticky and so you can roll it quite happily in your hands. Make 4 balls and flatten.
-Fry in olive oil turning occassionally

Sorry the measurements aren't accurate, it's all a bit trial and error!

How about using a fish cake recipe/idea and using veggies like sweetcorn, small bits of broccoli and peppers etc instead of the fish and mixing it up with mashed spud? I've not tried to MAKE them personally, but that's all the supermarket 'vegetable burgers' are??

Having suggested it to you I'm mighty tempted to try this soon. Hmmmm....
