  • I have changed nearly 50 x Halogen lamps to LED in my house. Most of the Halogen fittings were installed by my wife while I was away on business! For example, my Hall had 9 x 50 Watt. I tried lower wattage Halogen, but the effect was not ideal. Now there are 9 x 3.5 Watt Warm Light LEDs. I didn't tell her at first and she didn't notice.
One of the problems is that the transformers and dimmer switches for Halogen lamps are not designed to operate at such low wattage; it's a bit like asking a car to drive in 1st gear. Some of the LEDs flickered. So I am slowly replacing them with ones suitable for LEDs. Another advantage is that the installer cut away the insulation around the Halogen light fittings where they are below the loft or a roof, to stop heat build-up from a 50 Watt source; I have had transformers burn out where poorly placed. I am replacing this insulation on completion of the transformer change.
I am also experimenting with LED candle lamps, LED floodlight and now Bayonet fitting LED lamps. The prices have come down and the quality/performance improved dramatically over even the last year.

I am planning on replacing my b22 and e14 candles in living room and dining room soon. I currently using megaman cfl's the light isn't as bright as I would like (286 lumens) it so I get some megaman candle with 400 lumens and get a dimmer that is suitable for led's

buglawton - cooker hood lights - my cooker hood just takes e14 fitment bulbs. In a cooker hood you're a bit restricted for space, but if you can find, for example, candle fitting LEDs, you could use them. I've been using CFLs in mine for quite a while. With the environment they're used it, they may not last as long.

Useful to know, been wondering a long while what I could use. Now need to find a really warm white so the missus does not notice what I've changed!

PS some can be as much as 58mm dia, others apparently as little as 30mm dia. Need under 50mm due to reflector positioning on the fitting.

I have tried CFL's and LED GU10 bulb and none of these matched the output, angle warmness of the halogen. Last week I ordered some 5W Auraglow COB GU10 and these are very close to the halogen output. There still expensive so will wait a while before I get some more.

If it really is tight, have a look for the 'candle' shape ones. They're meant to be decorative and pretty, but they'll fit into tight spaces too! Warm white doesn't matter much to me in there, it's not really the main source of lighting. You do want something bright though. I think mine were 40W from memory - you'll be wanting around 400lm to replicate the same brightness.

muks11 - I've tried hard to replace 50w halogens too and tried a few different LEDs, as well as the brightest CFL I could find. The CFL takes too long to warm up IMO for a bathroom.
You need at least 400lm to replace a 50W halogen IMO. Mine were 60 degree ones, and I'm trying to replace like for like. Narrowing the beam angle would just be cheating.
Have a look at this page:

I've got a couple of older ones including a V6 spot (they're onto V7 now) and the V6 is just about there. That 7W dimmable looks to be the best value to me at the mo.
