Best mattress..

Options
Can Anyone recommend a good mattress for a back sufferer.
Ihave a fragile back and when it goes I usually sleep on the floor for a few nights to help it.
The mattress we use now seems to leave me "stiff"(and not in a good way) in the mornings.
But I am not sure if I should be getting a harder one (stop it) or a softer one.
any ideas.
is the most expensive the best ????

Most expensive definitely not the best, neither is hardest. My OH suffered with this too. Since changing to a memory foam one, he's had it happen far less. Makro are currently doing Silentnight MF for £250 + VAT for a KS.

Check out Kaymed 1600 (Visco pocket) . This mattress is a combination of nasa research ( memory foam) and old fashioned spring technology all rolled into one. Some retailers will negotiate between £699-£729 for a 5 ft. or between £899-£1140 for a 6 ft.
Also voted best value for money by 'Which Magazine'. Following is a link to site:

    Hope this helps.

    You may be right..
Who told you I was grumpy.
I thought I hid it quite well...

Not sure I would sleep well owing £699 tho..

On a serious note tho... is the extra cost really worth it..?
it all just springs and foam isnt it...
is there a point where a mattress cant get any better.
    (about £101 hopefully)
Or will the £699 change my life ?

£99 is a bit optimistic! That's the sort of money I'd pay for a guest bedroom that was hardly used. Think of how much you use it - 8 hours a night for how many nights; what would that work out per night? I would reckon 300 quid minimum.

We bought a memory foam type of mattress and for two weeks didn't get any sleep. They are VERY comfy, in terms of support etc. but after about ten minutes its like sleeping on a hot griddle. They seem to reflect back all your body heat (and then some) and you get really uncomfortable on them. It really felt very hot and sticky and we couldn't drop off. I do seem to get quite warm in bed, but hubby doesnt and he found it just as uncomfortable. After two weeks of trying to get on with it (it was veeery expensive), he rang the shop up and told them he was bringing it back. We ended up with a different, traditional mattress and it was bliss to be able to sleep soundly again. I'm not saying that everyone reacts this way to the memory foam stuff, but it didn't suit us at all.

Just something to be aware of when considering a new mattress I think. Good luck with your problem though!

Crystal ball comes to mind:rotfl: ... still seriously, spoil yourself, maybe wait untill just before x-mass or just after..the furniture stores are likley to be willing to bargain. In the meantime find out which store in your area stocks some good quality beds.....tests them....take a friend / partner with you for the fun bit (taking note of the opening hours). Take some notes of the one you like( bed that is) and then possibly order over the internet.

    Yea Thanks everyone.
I think I should spend a little more due to the hourly useage... (now I think about it,my sofa cost more)
Its a difficult thing to test drive though..
Do many places let you return unsuitable mattresses..?
