  • Hi im new to this thread, just been made redundant.

I have applied for a few jobs so far, still waiting to hear if I will get an interview, as closing dates not til the end of the week. Going to job club tomorrow so hopefully some more vacancies to apply for may come up. There are only so many times I can click the refresh button on the job pages of the Direct Gov website lol.

    Hi Twinkle,

Glad you found us, feel free to join in, even if all you want to do is just have a rant every now and then.

Good luck with your job hunting.
  • Hi,

I'm new to the forum although I've read lots of threads for a year or so. I'm job hunting after being made redundant on 24th February and am finding it all pretty soul destroying. I left a good well paid full time job on 5th January for this wonderful new opportunity (I'm a PA) and a few weeks later whammo - no money to pay wages. How stupid was I to move hey? My old job was filled after I left so I'm trawling all the job sites hourly, have registered with numerous agencies but still nothing. I've applied for a few posts that have closing dates the middle of March though so have my fingers crossed.

I've been to the Jobcentre to register as unemployed (I cried all the way home after that experience), they treated me as if I was unable to comprehend big words and treated me awfully. I've actually put in a complaint about the way they treated me and how the woman spoke to me. It's actually nice to read of people securing jobs on this thread as it gives you a bit of hope as I sometimes feel my CV disappears into some dark deep place never to be seen or heard of again. I must have applied for nearly 30 jobs online by now and I'm beginning to wonder if the jobs that are advertised actually exist :-(

I have an online application to finish today that I have been putting off (closing date isnt for a week yet, I WILL get it done.). I have filled in 90 percent of it, but there is a section where it is asking the type of questions that stump me totally. Stuff like 'Giving examples, please detail your ability to organise your workload, solve problems and meet objectives.' I HATE questions like this. I never know what to put without sounding like I am waffling a load of old flannel :(

When I get asked things like this at interview I fall apart. Im not good at interviews at all. I get too nervous, I have sleepless nights when an interveiw is coming up. Ive been quite lucky as my interveiws for my last couple of jobs were fairly informal. But once I went to an information evening for a job I really really wanted to do, and they let slip that the interview, which was the following day, was going to be conducted by a panel of 4. That was that. I actually turned up for the interview, and was standing outside the place, but I just couldn''t force my feet to walk in. I find things like that so intimidating. There are also other jobs I have wanted to apply for but I know that their interview process involves group interviews and role play type exercises and I just can't do it.

Welcome to the thread Northan Princess and Twinkle. I hope your stay here is short and you find a jobs soon!

I got an email this morning about the Singapore job, and they've invited me for an interview / chance to shadow for a couple of days. I'm going to try and secure a few more - maybe in Hong Kong and do them in bulk! I just hope plane tickets aren't too expensive. I've had a offer from friends to stay with them when I get interviews, so at least I won't have pay for a hotel...Gah, this is tricky. I don't want to make multiple trips.

    Morning,

Katkim, go for it. This is a major opportunity for you. I hope you can make a few more appointments. If you tell them you're going to be there anyway i'm sure they'll try and accomodate you.

Good luck out there today everybody.

KatKim, that's pretty cool, good luck with getting things lined up nicely!

To anyone upset by the JC, it isn't you, they sometimes do that! Don't feel ashamed and don't let it affect your confidence. Thing is they panic you into desperation and 'oh you should take any job' right from the start. Things improved for me when I realised I had more chance of getting the well paying job I am qualified for and close to zero chance of the 'any job'. I have my advisor on side now, when he realised this.
He still has to print off appallingly inappropriate and dodgy jobs for me, but as long as I am honestly looking for work it's just the system.

I have a telephone interview for the awesome job today, I have previously been really bad at these, put off by not having a face to talk to - does anyone have any tips for this?

My interview on Monday was horrible, I felt I was answering the questions well, but the interviewers didn't seem interested in anything I had to say :( boo.

Re. phone interviews, I've done a few, generally good results. I like to stand up while talking on the phone to the other person. In my head I think of them as a friend I'm chatting to, but I find the standing up makes me feel a bit assertive with it (it's something I used to do a lot on conference calls).

I also have a list nearby of tips/answers to questions that I can glance at.

Do you look people up on Linkedin that are interviewing you? Depends what industry you are in on whether they are on there, I work in IT companies. Sometimes I notice something useful. One time a guy who interviewed me had gone to university in the town in America my aunt was from... so I asked in conversation where he was from and had a chat about it.. helped with rapport. Doesn't happen often but was worth it for a 5 second search.

    Good luck.
