  • Applied for a job this morning now the agency wants me to come in and register. I can only register on Friday, does that mean I will miss out on the job I applied for? or are they just wasting my time and petrol whatever day I go? The number of times I have done this is ridiculous..

I am so fed up. I am a 30 year old male and I can practically cry on cue. Only been out of work 4 weeks so far, but previously I have been caught up in vicious cycle of fixed-term contracts. Getting a permanent job seems utterly impossible to me. All these horrible agencies everywhere, the ruthlessness of the world of work etc..it's just killing me.
  • Well after biting the bullet and deciding it was time to register with some agencies I called one up today to ask if she had a chance to look over the CV I emailed yesterday. It went like this:

Agency: Yeah well I had a look at your CV and to be honest I'd struggle to place you because you have a 2 year gap on your CV.
Me: Yes it's been 2 years since I was in an admin post but in that 2 years I've finished a degree, gotten a post grad and volunteered at Citizens Advice, does that not count for anything?
Agency: Well, no. We have clients looking for recent skills and you don't have those. Bye.

    :(

Seriously beginning to wonder why I bothered going to university at all!
Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190 :)

Purplerose that is awful!! Personally I'd say that counts for a lot, and it's not really a gap is it as you've been doing something, you've not been sat at home doing nothing.

I've applied for several jobs in schools as I've been training to be a teacher but hated my uni so am awaiting an interview in May to start at a different one in September. It will be part time instead of the full time one I was doing so I could work in a school around it. (Or that's my plan)

    Wow, Purplerose, that's horrible.

Have you tried other agencies? Maybe ask your friends or friends of friends, or even your college/uni careers department if they recommend any. Don't give up, I'm sure there are recruiters who won't dismiss a degree or volunteer work!

It is a vicous circle everyone, unfortunately we have to follow through on applications, visiting agencies and going to interviews that we don't think we are suitable for just in the hope that one of these thin threads of hope we cling to may come to something.

I've applied for three jobs today, one with no wages quoted and two which are fairly out of my experience range but you never know.

Lexilex I find screaming into a pillow helps, it doesn't scare the neighbours.......
  • Hey,

I share everybodys frustration, it has been a rubbish day for me today as I didn't get any further following my 2 interviews yesterday. I think what makes it worse is that for one especially I thought I had done really well in the interview and definitely could have done the job. Apparently the 2 candidates that they put through to the final stage appeared to want it more then me. Although I really don't know what more I could have said or done to show how much I wanted it because I repeatedly re-iterated what a great role it was and that I wanted to be part of a successful ambitious company.

Update on my post above on claiming expenses apparently it isn't company policy to pay expenses for the 2 interviews I had on Monday or the one I have on Thursday in London. Which obviously is really annoying so just wondering whether I can claim travel expenses through the job centre?

Good luck with the interview, here's some info on the job centre helping with travel expenses. You'll have to clear it with them before the interview. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Jobseekers/programmesandservices/DG_173631

I think that there was a scheme where you can get discounted rail travel, but I'm not sure if that's still running. You best check with the job centre, you never know.

I'll join the ranks of those of us having a rubbish day - I just checked my email and there was another rejection in my inbox. I'm trying not to let it get to me, but it's difficult. After all the effort, to get another rejection on top of all the other rejections, my confidence is getting a battering. I hate this. I hate that we're in this situation, and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel :(

Thanks yeah, I've got an appointment with another agency on Monday but it isn't the best. They said most of the work they get is 1 day jobs which isn't really worth my while as it would screw up benefits/council tax. They said they sometimes get in week to week jobs so I said I'd be interested in those. I'll try calling a couple more agencies tomorrow.

On a more positive note, a couple of half decent jobs appeared on various sites just before 5pm so I have applied for those. I also contacted some places with regard to doing some voluntary work so maybe I'll hear from them :)

I'm going to have a whinge too. Found out I just can't reasonably get to one of the jobs for tomorrow so that's out and the other one pays rubbish. Also got offered a weeks temp work but then because I asked for a later lunch to go to an interview I didn't get it.

    One of those "ARGHHHHHH" days!
