  • I would go with the volunteer route, it helps fill work gaps, gives you something extra to put on your CV and shows enthusiasm if you are willing to do it free. I think it is especially important if changing roles as you might find from volunteering that that might not be for you either. I am trying to get into an admin role but have never done an admin role before just roles that had elements of different admin jobs but now I volunteer as an admin it looks a bit better if that makes sense. Maybe write to some local firms? I have no idea about how the accountancy world works it's a mystery to me :)

    Hi Folks

I have been lurking on this thread for the last couple of days and have read ALL the posts - it did take me a few days to go through them all! Anyway, I thought I would share my story of being unemployed and hopefully get some advice/guidance from all you lovely people out there !

I have been out of work for just over a year now, I have almost 10 years experience of credit control. I have always enjoyed dealing with numbers, so that is probably the reason why I did credit control for so long. However, doing it for such a long time became boring (there is only a certain amount that needs to learned in order to do the job competently).

After my last job ended, I decided to do some tests (the ones which claim to match you to your ideal career). After spending a few weeks doing these and also using the govenment's careers website, I decided that accountancy was the most relevant to me. Therefore, in order to develop my career from credit control, I started the AAT (accountancy course) in the summer of last year. However, I am still out of a job and trying to find suitable employment (sales/purchase ledger clerk, accounts assistant etc)!

In order to get a 'relevant' role in the accountancy field, what would you suggest I do? Do you think I should initially get a credit control role and then work in other parts of accounts in an organization, or do you think I should get some experience via volunteer route in other parts of the accounts e.g .sales/purchase depts?

Finally, has anybody got any advice in terms of which websites or publications are best for featuring accountancy roles?

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

I am so sorry! It's only when I seen your username that I remembered you asked for my CV! I'm in the middle of things at the moment but will send it in the morning for you.

I'm afraid I don't have any answers for you though, will let the others answer ;)
Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.
  • Well after my rejection letter scanned all the websites that I usually visit and found absolutely nothing to apply for. Going to find it hard to fill in all the boxes on my jobseekers agreement at this rate. Jobs in this area are few and far between.:(
  • I don't think in the 7 months I have been unemployed I have fulfilled my Jobseekers Agreement at any point :o

Hi Geek, whereabouts in the country are you based? Eden Scott, Michael Page and Hays are all known for accountancy jobs - there may also be some agencies local to you only that specialise in accountancy roles? If you look in the jobs section of your local paper under the accountancy section, there are probably certain agencies that crop up each week - there's your starting point.

I'm not sure what you are suggesting re unpaid work is a goer - you can't 'volunteer' for a big company, you have NMW to consider. I would imagine charities would only want qualified accountants to help out, but might be wrong.

If you are struggling to get a job as an accounts assistant, but think you could get work in credit control (based on your past experience), it might not be a bad idea, just to get you back into the game and show recent accountancy experience. You could then keep looking for a different type of accountancy role - but you would be in a stronger position, I think.

My encounters with the Job Centre were very relaxed. They seemed to be more concerned with those making no efforts or those that struggle to get motivated. Going along with your rejection letter and saying that you scan the jobs websites/newspapers will satify them that you are activly looking for work.

    Don't worry, keep looking ;)

Woke up feeling a bit rubbishy today. I want an interview! Well really I just want a job without the interview, but that's pretty unlikely. Haven't heard anything in ages. I feel like I'm never going to get out of this :(

Me too. I honestly did not think that things could ever be this bad. There is hardly anything to apply for, when there is they don't even acknowledge you. Just makes me feel totally worthless tbh. Im an intelligent woman with over 11 years experience in admin, had no gaps in my employment history until now, never job hopped, have voluntary experience under my belt, and have even got off my backside to study for a degree in my spare time. But im unemployable it seems. Makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with me. Especially when I see some of the rude, unhelpful individuals in various positions that have somehow managed to get themselves a job.

Lexi and Twinkle, spot on. Hold out though, you will get there!

I have an interview today at the biggest employer I have ever been to for a fantastic job, it kind of blows my mind.
It took me a year to get here. Of course I am probably going to blow it :)
