Does anyone have a template for a good speculative letter? I've been trying to write a basic one to then personalise to each employer I am sending them too but I can't help but sound really desperate. Each time it seems to turn into a begging letter.0

Hi all. This has been a busy thread today!!! I'm actually cooking dinner at the moment so can't read all of it.
I just wanted to say that I went for my interview yesterday and it was the weirdest interview that I have ever had. The two people interviewing me spent about 20 minutes going through my CV and telling me about the job and the following 20 minutes talking about things completely unrelated to the job (for example, what's happening in Japan, the government's plans for the NHS, local traffic conditions and lack of reliable bus services). Is this a new way of interviewing? They have told me that if they are interested they will let me know and I have to go back for another interview and their tests. Its only for an Admin Assistant but I liked the sound of the post and I really, really want it so fingers (and everything else) crossed.
I will come back later and read the rest of the thread.0 -

yes what a weird interview, was it for a local firm eg a non national firm0 -
This seems like a good thread!! Good questions by the OP too.
I work full time, but its in retail and i hate it, and i wanna use my degree if i can! I applied for a job as an air hostess, and i got it but i'm in a waiting list sort of thing for a date, because i've recently had an operation. But, i don't really want it, so in the meantime i'm applying for other things. I finished my CV today, and almost done the covering letter for it, but i always think my covering letters let me down. They are so hard!!
Good luck to all those applying and being interviewed, we all have to hang on to the fact we will make it one day.0 -

I almost always use the university of kents cv/covering letter help. They have a speculative template on there.0 -
Hi there thread, I've lurked for a while and not yet posted in here.
I have a question...how far would you travel for a job? Hypothetically, if there was a job on offer that was offering you an 8 hour day for 5 days a week, but you had to travel 90 minutes to get there each way, would you take it?
"Travel", for sake of argument, is 90 minutes of bus, train or car, and (in my case) the costs of travel would eat the first hour and a bit of pay.0 -

No. For one thing it would be impossible for me to do this as I am a lone parent who doesn't drive, so I would have no childcare if that was the length of the commute each way. My local after school club finished at 6pm. Not to mention the cost as well. And after a time I think that commute would really really start to grate.'If honour were profitable, every man would be honourable' Thomas More

Discovered yesterday that despite registering on S1 Jobs and setting up e mail alerts, they haven't been e mailing me anything - I presumed there were just no jobs matching my requirements as my mum is registered with them and she gets about 20 e mails a day off them. But I did a proper search of the site yesterday and found about 6 jobs that completely match the criteria I specified, but I recieved no notification of.
One of them could have been perfect as well, admin job, wanted someone who was available for interview today and able to start tomorrow. But it had been posted on Monday, and although I e mailed my CV, I never heard anything. Prob too late. Another job I applied for, I discovered that its one of my mums oldest friends that is in charge of the recruitment. I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.'If honour were profitable, every man would be honourable' Thomas More

Good morning
Great interview with recruiter yesterday, he is super lovely. Wants to put me up for two superb jobs, I just have to tailor two CVs today. Boy, I am going to sweat this! I have realised just how much I do myself down and it breaks my heart. I really hope I can turn it around permanently today. I really have done some amazing and audacious things in my career and it is time to blow the trumpet.
It is actually amazing that my last job ruined me so much that it took a year to recover, I could cry!
Interview critique: Fabulous darling! Charming, calm, paced, confident, clear, questioning, definite, sweet. Didn't wear the dress suit and stilettos, went smart casual punk with a nice hat. To be proud of.
