Hope I'm not breaking any rules here- I rather like the creative living forum [if you google those words it should come up]

I looked at this thread with interest as a late forty something who, no disrespect, finds the focus on some other threads of endless posts on mse relating to people with children at home whilst interesting, irrelevant to my own life. I didn't know the over 50s board existed but on the transfer of this thread have taken a look and find it similarly irrelevant to my life now and my life in the nar future. I'm finding this a little difficult to phrase without seeming disrespectful but the most of the threads on this board TODAY seem to me to be far more appropriate to my own parents - very healthy, highly active retired from work seniors. As I write the front page of this forum has posts on nursing homes, the winter fuel allowance, etc.

I honestly don't think that was what the OP was looking for - perhaps they will confirm? In my opinion over 50 is a ridiculously arbirtrary distinction on this forum. I'm not quite there but do find it bizarre that you feel that the same forum is appropriate for me, still in the workforce dealing with mortgages, etc, is just as appropriate for my retired 75+ parents dealing with their pensions, the problems they have with insurance, etc.

I think it would be better to have forum for 'mid-lifers' (allowed to be self defined by the posters) and retired people.

Peartree - whilst I can see your point, to have a board for mid-lifers would only serve to prompt the thirty-somethings to ask for their own board, followed by demands for their own board from those who are single or teenagers or allotment owners and so on.
This discussion about who the over 50 board is intended to serve crops up pretty regularly and the outcome is usually that whilst it isn't perfect, it serves its purpose reasonably well.

Peartree`s right to an extent...whilst the over 50`s board on here is an excellent resource, it isn`t really for me simply because I don`t have much in common with most of the posters, financially or otherwise, so don`t feel I could contribute profitably. No disrespect meant to the board though, it`s doing a great job. :)
I didn`t mean to cause any trouble, what I was really asking was is there any forum like the one I mentioned looking for elsewhere online, as opposed to on MSE, which probably sounds cheeky, hope not though! :)

Red Doe - I think a discussion about the point and purpose of any of the Boards is always useful and healthy :)

What about a neighbourhood forum? Obviously I don't know about the whole country but I live in West London and there are about a dozen groups for this area - Brentford, Chiswick, Ealing, Acton, Shepherds Bush, Wandsworth etc. As well as giving community information, there are pretty lively discussion forums about all sorts of stuff, from what's going on locally (the introduction of controlled parking zones for instance) to looking for lost cats and what the government is doing. actonW3.com is one and ChiswickW4.com another.

Perhaps it might be worth your while googling for local stuff.

May I second both these comments.
I scan the 'Silver Savers' with a mind to my parents' /MiL's situations only - for 'Silver' I (politely) read 'Senior', a position I will not reach for at least another 13 years ie when I retire.

as this isn't Old Style related, I've moved this to the over 50s forum to see what folks can offer over there :)
I regularly say that we have never asked to see your birth certificate before allowing you to join in with anything on the Over 50s board which takes your fancy ...

it's true that the same questions come up at regular intervals, just as they do on the Families board (and IME most of the boards have repeat questions!). However we also have the Skier or Skater thread, and the Living Abroad thread, which are usually more 'cheerful', and those living abroad are not all over 50.

for specific issues which affect any age, there are the specific boards - mortgages, pensions, insurance, so generally I'd suggest looking there for information.

but other forums are available: I'm resisting the one suggested because I spend too much time here as it is!

53, divorced, two children. Oldest 27, 23 year old still at home (due to ill health), one cat, full time job, elderly parents, some social life, but not as much as I would like, and dont earn that much unfortunatley, love MSE.
    Growing old disgracefully!
