I think sometimes it's best to join a forum with a commom interest rather than just age. There's too wide a range of hobbies, interests and life commitments if you just home in on age! For example my favourite forums where I'm a member include camping, knitting, cycling, fiction writing, gardening and Playmobil collecting as well as this one.

That's what I was thinking! I am not sure forums for a particular age group would necessarily work. I'm in my 30s, but don't always have a lot in common with other 30-somethings who are often in the settling down stage. OP - you mentioned a forum for "mid forties to around sixty". That's quite a large age span. Lots of my mid forties friends are sexy professional women who haven't settled down yet. I'm not sure they would feel they have much in common with people nearing retirement age! ;o)

I think a forum based around an interest could still provide you with what you want as other topics get discussed. I love crafts and find that a lot of people who are into crafts are also into money saving and living a simple lifestyle so that is often discussed on the forums. The other thing would be to pick an hobby that you feel would be of particular interest to your age group.

Depends on the people who are nearing reitrement age really. I find it rather patronising that you assume that people approaching retirement age are not sexy or professional and have settled down; and the implication that people who have settled cannot be sexy or professional seems to me to be ridiculous
I am 48, have no kids, no parents and am in the process of being divorced by husband who decided he deserved an upgrade so that he could "have fun before it was too late". My interests are often very different from my younger friends whose social lives are hampered by young families etc.
I think that Red Doe has put forward an interesting idea; obviously it wouldn't work for everyone but it would be great for those that wanted it. Those that don't are not being forced to join in.

I wouldnae think 'twas rulebreaking to give the link - so here it is:

Had a quick glance - and I shall be going back for a good browse - thanks..

*********************

I certainly see the point of O.P. - as there is a time and a place for all agegroups "getting together" (eg right here...:)) and us older ones can keep up with new ideas and not get too "set in our ways" on the one hand and the younger ones have the chance to pick up tips from those who have been "following the path for many years" on the other hand. So - a mutually beneficial arrangement.

There are times too where its of benefit to discuss things with those in a more similar situation (in this case - age group). There is a difference of emphasis sometimes between:
- getting everything in the first place (making sure you've got the home and the work on it has been done and debts cleared)

on the one hand and

- now I've got everything basic..is there still anything needful to get to be completely "sorted out" and how can I make sure I keep safe what I have

on the other hand

Having said that - I guess there might be a change in emphasis in thinking again once one reaches old age. I have seen my own viewpoint change from "How do I get sorted out in the first place?" when younger to "What I have I hold - and what else is needful to be completely sorted out?" in midlife. At old age I expect my stance to shift again to "How best can I disseminate what I no longer need - so that its being used to best effect - and simplify my life even further?".

*************

Just speaking personally my main theme has gone from "How to clear mortgage and debts?" to "How can I protect my savings? Is there any way to get together with others to put pressure on to make sure that we at least get a rate of interest on our savings that at least keeps pace with inflation?". The old age viewpoint for me personally will be "How can I word my Will to make sure my money is all being used wisely after my death?" At that point I would like to have somebody/some organisation that is completely trustworthy at spending my money to try and help improve Society in the way I would do right now (only I still need it tied up to protect my own home and income whilst I'm still here).

I'm a member there though not a very active one. (Can't be everywhere at once!) Great forum though.

I don't think I've ever been glamerous btw, but I hope I carry on being sexy (at least to my OH) till I'm very, very old indeed. I really don't care what the rest of the planet think...I've got no desire to make the effort to be sexy every day for a bunch of random strangers anyway. Professional and well groomed yes, elegant (bit beyond me, but I try if necessary!) yes, but there's something a bit increasingly desperate about grown up women trying to look "sexy" while wandering round Tesco imho.

as this isn't Old Style related, I've moved this to the over 50s forum to see what folks can offer over there :)

Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

thanks

I would never had grown up if i'd realised you had to wash dishes.
