I havent used suet for years except in Christmas pudding when I use veg. suet.

My recipe for dumplings is to mix 4oz SR flour with 2 oz marg( I use Clover, a tsp of dry mustard mixed herbs pepper and salt. Rather than add water , use a small amount of milk to combine and form into small balls. I add mine about 40 minutes before the end of cooking time and they are light and fluffy.

    Hi:hello:
I've got a wartime cookbook and all they say you need to do for dumplings is to mix plain flour and herbs with water and then shape into little balls with floured and hands and drop in the stew and cook gently.
I've done this a few times and they are a bit heavy but taste OK, really filling on a cold day.
    Nice in soup too:rotfl: :rotfl:

Do you think that self-raising flour or baking powder would lighten them up a bit. I think that I'd go for that. :)
  • Thank you all for this thread - stew with dumplings sounds a lovely idea to me, but DH doesn't like suet. So guess what we're going to have now? :D
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Can you put your cobblers in the slow cooker?
I don't think so as the oven has to be fairly hot and the lid left off. I think it would work for dumplings placed in a slow cooker for the last 1/2 hour. I don't have a slow cooker but am thinking of getting one. If anyone tries cobbler or dumplings in the slow cooker I would be interested in how it turned out.
    :)
  • Is this possible? if so how?

Alos not entirely sure how to make them with suet so if someone could post how

Not sure why you pose the question, but Atora do a vegetarian suet, which may answer the question which I'm not sure why you posed ;) . Instructions are on the packet!
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

You can make what they call a cobbler.

    Cobbler
    225g (8oz) Flour
    225g (8oz) Cheddar Cheese
    25g (1oz) Butter
    2 Eggs
    2 tbsp Milk
    1 tbsp Parsley
    1 tsp Prepared Mustard

I use self raising flour and marg with water. They puff up beautifully in stew and they're not as heavy as suet dumplings.
Mix flour and marg till dryish breadcrumb texture then add drops of water till it holds together in a ball.
