I'm a veggie and love dumplings...
i just buy the vegetarian suet (Atora..or the tesco equivalent).
Seem to come out lush...great for this colder weather too.
Don't think Spain have a Tesco :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Just take another look at the OP....:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Hi cholita,
This older thread may help:
Help Please! Dumplings without suet?
I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the suggestions together.

I use oil for dumplings. This recipe is from a vegan cookbook from America.
1 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 - 3/4 cup milk
2 tbs oil
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Add milk and oil. Mix to form a batter which should be easy to work with - not too dry and not too moist and thick.
It makes fluffy dumplings without that awful coating of fat in the mouth which suet always seems to leave.0 -
You can certainly use butter or marge for dumplings.
It must be hard to be veggie in Spain -it always strikes me as quite a meaty cuisine, or am I wrong ?:)0 -
i can't buy suet in france either - indeed butter or margarine will work, but if you want something that looks and feels more or less the same as suet: i have used the solid fat they sell for deep-frying (either vegetable fat or beef dripping) and grated it. this does the trick just fine."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

I'm in a city, but haven't found veggie suet anywhere. Could check the health food shops - that's where veggie products tend to be found.
I suppose Spanish cuisine is quite meat-based, even more so in Argentina LOL. Poor OH, ending up with a vegetarian ... So it's not the easiest of countries, but not impossible either. The health food stores sell soya mince. One of the Asian supermarkets sells frozen foods like sausages and cutlets, but at €6, that's not very MS! So I tend to cook from scratch, as even the supermarkets stock things like chickpeas, beans, nuts etc.
I would LOVE to be able to get Quorn here ... the one thing I really miss.0
