You have misunderstood or have been seriously misinformed.
To look at a webpage data has to be downloaded to your PC, surfing is just a vernacular term, streaming refers to a 'live' feed e.g watching live TV online.

Have a look at the BBC iplayer. A half hour programme streamed in HD is a 0.5Gb download or stream.

Maybe their own advert seriously misinformed me...
A whopping 40GB allowance, enought to download 10,240 music files, 40,960 photos, 59 movies, 10 HD movies or 117 hours of iPlayer every month. If you exceed your usage allowance, we won't cut you off. You'll simply be charged a little extra (£5 per 5GB).

We don't do any of the above, but we do have an Xbox

The advert is indicative of what you could download within a particular allowance. Only that - indicative. It takes no account of all other uses of your internet connection which use data i.e. all of them.

In your original post you say "To avoid additional costs, I upgraded to Option2 with 40GB download allowance"

In fairness there is no "40GB download allowance" there is a 40GB allowance which is not the same thing.

Have just spent 40 minutes with 4 different depts at BT

I have been offered Option 3 at £40 p.m. plus £13.60 line rental

I found 22 emails from BT in my btinternet.com email box yesterday. My profile indicates that I use my aol.com email address. BT have been corresponding with me on my aol.com address since November 2010.

I have been offered no explanation for overusing my broadband useage.

I was sold a SkySports1 package which cannot be used in my area until the end of 2011. I have been charged for this.

I constantly receive bank detail correspondence addressed to someone else!

BT instructed me to cancel my direct debit on 17 December and they would set up a new one with an increased amount for 28 December 2010. This was never done by them.

No other options/arrangements available to me.

I expressed my dissatisfaction and advised that I would like this contract terminated.

I advised the rep that I record all my calls and was told I was breaking the law and he hung up on me

What a truly unbelievable state of affairs!!!!!!!

From another thread, someone in a similar position to me:
The lady i spoke to was very nice, and explained that it would be in our best interest to upgrade to option 3 - unlimited broadband and unlimited calls, and that she can do this as a special offer for us.

I've just recieved my latest bill, and we have recieved what i think is an excellent deal as we now pay £10.50 a month + line rental, when the advertised price for our package is £28 a month + line rental.
Less than half the advertised price!

Sounds like you need to escalate this ASAP.

As others have stated, your monthly limit is a data usage limit, not a download limit. For most people, downloading would be the most likely reason to take them over that limit, but not exclusively so. In your case, it's clearly your son's gaming that has done it.
This is not unique to BT-it's the way all ISP's measure usage on a capped tariff.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yes it does, and BT have been emailing me on it since November!

    Yes, it's an additional £6.99 p.m.

Yes, I know that, but he didn't give me a chance to tell him the law !

I feel I have got to get all this into writing to Head Office ???

BT's own wording of 40GB useage is a little misleading to say the least, don't you think?

If you no longer pay for your AOL account be aware that the address could stop at anytime.

If you have been mis-sold the BT Vision Sky package then get that removed and refunded ASAP

How far have you escalated this all up BTs official complaints procedure?
