Pease Pudding

Help needed if anyone can. Bought a bag of split peas as we seem to go through loads of peas pudding, and I haven't got a clue how to turn them from little pea things into peas pudding. Any recipe ideas ? No cooking instructions on packet :confused: I'm usually a convenience person so my first attempt at being a little more advenurous and don't want a disaster.
One day I might be more organised...........:confused:

    oh my god you make me feel like an old timer. :eek:

    home made pease pudding is lovely - but you have to have lots of hours spare, ideally soak the split peas overnight, the sort bad ones out ( you will know them) then start to boil for hour and half, then simmer until soft, could go on forever, till you can mush on side of pan, strain off and put through a sieve or processor.

    easy way - go to tesco

    cost of peas and fuel to cook v straight from tin :rolleyes:

    go for convenience :p
    yes you can beat it :j - everyday is a bonus - use it well

  • i think when my mam and dad make them they boil them up in ham water, and I think they cook some potato with them as well (though not for as long) and then whizz it all up using a hand blender. Home made is so much nicer than shop bought, and you can add some stuff to it, maybe some sweated off onions?
    Think of it as geordie houmous and customise accordingly.

    My mam always makes it at Christmas and my cousin who lives in London takes loads back with him, he reckons homemade is best.

    It freezes very well.

    I just made some this week!

    I put 300g of yellow split peas into 1L of water previously used to boil ham/gammon. I also throw the scraps from the meat in as well, and sometimes a little salt depending on how salty the water is already.

    Leave it the the slow cooker for hours until it goes smooth and runny. Take it off the heat and leave to cool and set. If the gammon/ham was fatty, you might get a layer of oil on the top which you can pour off.

    It's far superior to tinned pease pudding :drool:

    Oh and don't forget the stotties to spread it on :D

    Thanks all :) I'll experiment tomorrow and test it on DP before I try it. I don't have a slow cooker but may have to invest in one.

    I asked someone on another forum and they had no idea, said must be a northern thing, maybe it is

    A Lincoln's special

    Roast pork
    Crackling
    Fried onions
    Sausagemeat stuffing
    and Pease pudding

    All hot and greasy but as an ex taxi driver at 10am after a 6am start these were the best thing with a coffee to keep you going.

    Sadly I now live in Cumbria and I think Joe Lincoln is long sice retired.

    its deff a northern thing im from jarra and live in mlton keynes now and you cant buy here sadly. iv made my own a few times but it doesnt taste like mams:confused:

    Am frae Scotland and we always had pease pudding with ham or gammon - real winter food in my memory. Am vegetarian now so don't do the ham but sometimes still have the pease pud but a word of warning can make some folk very windy :eek: - may or may not be something to take into consideration :o

    Hi everyone
    I'm in the middle of slow cooking a beef and veg caserole and instead of mash with it I thought I'd do pease pudding.:D :D

    I had a look in Mr T's at a tinned variety and all it said was spilt dried peas, salt and spices, water and a few E numbers.:j

    I know pease pudding is `mashy' so what I'm going to do is hard boil then bake in the oven, the split peas in water, add chopped onion, garlic, stock cube and salt and pepper then when it's cooked whizz with the hand blender.

    Then stick back in the oven for a little while longer

    Does this sound right to you guys?:confused::confused:

    Could be windy in Wales tomorrow lol:rotfl: :rotfl:
