Try to find and post up your sync rate....
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
The BT text doesn't make any sense but it does explain why O2 quoted 17Mbps.
A line that is only capable of 3Mbps on ADSL will not deliver 17Mbps on ADSL2+. You'd need to be getting a solid 8Mbps for that. When I was on ADSL I just managed to get 8Mbps and on ADSL2+ that line delivered only ~ 13Mbps.0 -

02 is still the obvious option on your exchange, you'll see some benefit from ADSL2+, but where they get 17 Mbps from I have no idea-are you sure it's not up to 17Mbps that they are quoting?
I've always found 02 to be slightly conservative in their line speed estimates-I was quoted 5.6, and ended up with just over 7.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

the broadband speed was up to either 20 or 24 meg on the website but their estimation was 17meg
when i phoned the first thing he said to me was the system is down, then i explained about the estimation which he said should be correct (refer to OP for the rest)

Don't forget tho that O2 now throttle your speed at peak times now;
http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=51883
On the back of what I posted before,I'm on a 'Legacy' package,O2 Standard. Now O2 on their forums state that customers on my package are unnafected by the throttle.
Funny how when I posted the above,I carried out a speed test & got
1Mb/s download,now when I run the speed test I'm getting this;0 -

yes i read that thread and i think most providers will be doing the same
i hav had sky broadband for a year thru bt line but before that was with virgin with 20meg which was great(different house)
thinking about going back to them

Unless your wiring is a complete dogs breakfast then it certainly won't deliver the 17Mbps which O2 told your it could. O2 base that on the BT figures you posted above. The BT ADSL2+ figure will be an estimate based on their calculation of your line length which may well be completely wrong. The ADSL figure probably comes from your actual ADSL performance.0 -
kwikbreaks wrote: »I need the attenuation and noise margin figures too. The fact that your line can't deliver 3Mbps on that sync and it has at times according to you suggests some instability so there may be scope for improvement by tidying up your internal wiring - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

That's so bad I'm wondering if you have something unfiltered or maybe a duff filter.
With 24dB attenuation you should easily be getting the full 8Mbps sync and 17Mbps from ADSL2+ would be achievable too.
If your master socket faceplate has a horizontal split half way down (NTE5 type) as a test try carefully removing it and plug a filter into the inner socket. With just your router connected (using a short lead) check the stats again. As the upstream sync shows that you have a BTw IPstream connection the download speed will not increase immediately in line with any sync improvement and connecting that way disconnects all your phones so you almost certainly will have to revert to how it was but while the faceplate is off if you have any wiring going to it you can remove the ones going to connector 3 (the ring wire).
If you are running your router on a plug in extension then that is bad news too.
A non-tech way to improve things would be to fit an iPlate and replace all your filters with good quality ones (XTE5 type from broadbandbuyer) or alternately just use a filtered faceplate from them instead although that requires a little more technical ability as wiring will need changing.0 -

Cheap plug in extensions use aluminium core cable which is even worse.0
