hi
looking for a new broadband provider and was on O2 website put my p/number and postcode in and the estimation was 17 meg , i have checked with other providers websites and they consistantly state between 2/3mb.
i phoned up O2 to ask how that works and he said it depends upon the providers software at the exchange
could someone please explain this to me
regards

O2 may be offering an LLU service on your exchange which the other (unnamed) providers do not. But it's unlikely to give that big a difference.
Check your LLU options on https://www.samknows.com by doing an exchange search.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Load of old cobblers.
The speed you can get is dependant on two main factors;
1-The length of the cable (Drop Wire) from the BT PSTN exchange to your NTE5 Master socket.(That is going by the route the cable takes,not direct line)
2-Age & Condition of the BT Drop Wire.
You need to put your phone number in the link below,that will tell you the speed your line can handle;
http://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html#
This is for my line;Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 8Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 7Mbps and 8Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 32.7Mbps and upstream line speed of 7Mbps.0 -
Since your only LLU options are 02 or TT, it's not a difficult choice to make on that exchange...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

If it is your current sync rate then you aare unlikely to be able to significantly better it. Even if that is ADSL and you move to an ADSL2+ supplier the increase will be small (I'd guess at 4Mbps max).0 -

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 2.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1.5Mbps and 3.5Mbps.
Your exchange is planned to have ADSL2+ by 31st March 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 17Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 10Mbps and 19.5Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1.5Mbps and downstream line speed of 12Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 11Mbps and 13Mbps.
The actual stable line speed supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This speed may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.
