    Are the Dukes earlies?

Yes they're first earlies I think.

I've given up on main crops because of blight in my area - my King Edwards were a bit of a disaster last year

Everyone should grow tomatillos too! :D I've grown them for 2 years now and they are a lovely productive crop.

I'm growing them this year :D are they the same care as tomatoes? Or is there anything more I need to do?

Also, what do you do with them? I have never been that good at using up my crops lol.... was just going to use them for chutney....

Hi MBE. I have the rhubarb covered but only by some plastic planters - how long do you leave them covered for?

New on the list for me this year is sweetcorn. Never tried it before so tips greatly appreciated.

Well...err...you leave it for as long as it takes! How tall are the planters? My rhubarb will grow until it starts lifting the bin off if I let it, but I just check every now and then to see how it's getting on. I'm guessing a month, maybe?

Can't help with the sweetcorn I'm afraid; can't stand the damned stuff! :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Hello.
It's my second year of growing too! I loved it last year and so I'm doubling the size of my veg patch this year and I'm raring to go. I just need to get someone to take the turf off the veg patch extension and wait for my poorly back to get better!
    [STRIKE]December low - £3012 January low - £2589[/STRIKE]
    February low -£2434
    Loan -£1075
In 2011, I aim to grow £120 pounds worth of produce. (£0 so far)
I'm also aiming to cook 100 new things before I buy a new cookbook. (82/100)

I actually got mine from a seed swap https://www.gardenswapshop.co.uk thing online. Not sure what I traded them for but worth it :)

Ooo...come and join the fun then. I also need someone to take the turf off a new bed, but I suspect it'll have to be me. :(

I got mine from real seeds/thompson & morgan.

Otherwise there is a forum for swapping (grapevine, google it)

Care same as tomatoes, they do grow very bushy. The fruits make amazing salsa and are just a little bit tart so they really zing up pasta sauce.

    Freezes well too.

I've just counted 17 varieties of tomatoes for this year :o

Well we got out yesterday and did some clearing of the veg patch, and it's looking more like a patch of ground now that things might actually grow in. I have taken some pics but can't post them from work so will try to do them when I get home. We found lots of bricks, nettles, broken pots and potatoes! Loads of potatoes in fact, some were rotten but quite a few looked perfectly healthy, but we won't be eating them! We also found what might be a strawberry plant but I'm not sure-I've taken a picture so will post that too when I figure out how to do it! So far the patch contains an established rosemary bush, thyme, a bay tree (we think) and some sage (purple sage I think), as well as a pretty new blackcurrent bush-but this has lots of buds on it. I think I might move the herbs though to another part of the garden to give me more room in the veg patch, what do you all think? Obviously you will be able to advise me better when I get the pics up.
