    Hope this works.

    Some carrots in a bucket.

    My Sweetie seedless toms.

Pots ready for runner beans next week.

It works! Thanks. Those toms look great. I'm sure mine will come good, but I wish they were a bit further on. Oh well, can't do owt about it now.

I think I had 4 runner bean plants last year, and was giving them away. I'll be growing double that this year, with your LAYA to try (still excited :D ).

Are you growing them for a small village? There must be 50 pots there!
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

    He means mine. :p

    Which are late. :o

Aah - don't tell him but mine in my cold greenhouse are bigger than his. If we're into comparing tomato sizes! ;)

I found that later sown toms do catch up so don't worry. I also find that if you grow them hard - they race ahead when it warms up. Plenty of time yet. So stop stressing.

Just ease off on the watering - what you don't want is soggy soil - they need air in there as much as water in order to grow.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Some anecdotal evidence to suggest runner beans and sunflowers will grow together quite happily. Bizarre. Do I risk it or not?

Or do I try to persuade my mate that he should grow sunflowers with his beans?

Well, well, that's what I did, but I didn't get as many beans off them as from the beans that were growing on their own up canes. Of course, I don't drink cola so no cans. I just shoved the bean seeds down by the sunflower roots.:D

    Questions questions.....

In answer to emiff; I do grow hundreds of beans, but I leave them all on the plant to dry and use them all winter long. I am also working with a few chums to increase the varieties of beans in the UK that are growing for drying...I never eat my french beans green [I grow a few runners for that]; and end up with trays and trays of dry beans all over the house come autumn. It's great!

Ah, I see. I'm not a fan of dried beans of any kind, and eat them green or freeze them green.

I was still harvesting my tomatoes last November which I am more than happy with - I'll stick to my way if that's ok. How can you say mine are a little late - you've not seen them?

You can stick to whatever way you like all I would say is my comments were directed to MBE and surely I should be able to voice an opinion too without you getting all stropy. That just makes you look like you know it all. "Aah - don't tell him but mine in my cold greenhouse are bigger than his. If we're into comparing tomato sizes!" That sounds a bit childish too. They were only to show MBE where mine are at and they were from a second sowing so were also late but had the advantage of a little heat.

"Picked 81 Tomatoes yesterday, about 30 are almost ripe enough and the rest will ripen under the stairs." That was my post from 14/10/2010 and they were only picked because I wanted the greenhouse cleared or they would have lasted into November.

    Hey John.

Chill out mate; no need to get snippy! It's just a bit of banter.

If you are going to have a go then expect a little back at ya! If you can't cope then perhaps wind it in a bit?

Easy gents! I appreciate both your advice! Everyone does things differently - there's more than one way to skin a cat, as they say. ;)

Mrbadexample snr and my Uncle Bob live within a mile of each other. Both grow vegetables successfully, but the difference in their styles is immeasurable. Dad's more orderly - certain things in certain places (think I'm a chip off the old block), but Bob's veg is all over the place, and all mixed in together. There isn't a spare bit of ground that hasn't got a little row of carrots in, or something. Not so much rotation as confusion. He doesn't compost, but throws his kitchen waste etc directly onto the veg plot (he's got a dalek but reckons he's never had anything worthwhile out of it). Both ways work.

Bit by bit, I'm learning what works for me, and to do that I want to know how everyone else does it - conventional or otherwise. :)

Some very helpful information on this thread - big thanks to everyone.

I have planted my peas & beans in their pots.

I hope tonight to dig & compost the garden. Tht'll allow me to get my carrots, onions, & possibly even my beetroot planted. I'll then be preparing the trenches for planting out the beans & seeds.

None of my tomatoes have sprouted yet though I didn't check last night - back from work very late...). I planted the first 12 seeds 3 weeks ago now. Every year I go throguh this panicky stage about "none of them are gonna sprout..."
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
