  • I had a friend who collected for a national charity for most of his life. He raised through his business thousands opf pounds and was excited when he was asked to sit on the regional board.

He went with his usual cheque in hand to the meeting and was disgusted that they were playing the property/stock market with the raised funds, the cash accounts at the bank being awash with the daya to day running needs.

Needless to say he did not hand over the cheque on that visit and rethinked his attitude to the charity.

If the individual artists who actually painted the foot and mouth cards........ received all the cash themselves....they'd be multi-millionaires by now!!

    Its a con!
  • A note for anybody wishing to leave charity donations in a will, a family friend did this & by law a solicitor executing the probate is automatically obliged to TELL the specified charity that they are due money when the person passes away, ALL charities are aware of this & only they know they will get money, so when the person does actually pass away, their family & friends who may not have been left anything in the will are unaware..UNTIL and this is a very true story.. the executor despite mourning for the loss of his family friend was harrassed & verbally abused upto 30 times a day for 3 months from 4 charities hounding him about when they would get the money from the dead persons will, it became so stressful for him that in the end the family sued the charity and he wanted nothing to do with dividing up her will..

So THINK people, before you leave money to charity, they will hound you daily before you die to check whether your dead yet & then explicitly hound your family when you do die begging for the cash, which never goes to the needy people because the charity directors earn circa £250,000 per year for the big charities

  • My mother briefly did volunteer work for a large charity but left when saw the top dogs, turning up in their BMW's and going out on business lunches on the charity's expenses! She was shocked when she saw the entertainment budget!!

I used to receive the cards - they sent them to me for about 3 years, I never paid for them or used them and they've stopped sending them now without me asking - not received any for a couple of years.

What really annoys me is that SOME, not all, of these painters are very well off! Certainly in the higher tax bracket!
  • Is anyone else brave enough to admit they actually use them without paying for them? Well I haven't yet but have just got round to getting my cards out to write and lo and behold I found some from mouth artists that I was obviously sent last year but put away with my unused cards. And if I run out of cards, I will use them (I don't actually like them that much but they'll do for a last few stragglers!) - I don't think I even feel guilty..... they sent them without me asking therefore they're a present aren't they?

If a solicitor is dealing with probate, the person has died. So the charity can't stay in touch with a dead person to find out when they have died.

I find the rest of your post unbelievable.

Well perhaps if you read my post correctly, i didnt actually say they would stay in contact with the dead person, duh! I said the charities were hounding the executor of the will, in that case it was a friend of the family who was named in the will (probate if you wish) after the person had died..

I also pointed out that whilst someone is alive STILL, and they name a charity as a benefit of their will, the solicitor can freely make that charity aware that they will receive money from a specific client whilst they are still alive.. but no other person or individual can be notified.

And yes.. its very true.. why would i lie about something thats recently happened to a family friend for the sake of charity scroungers who i can't stand. get a life please

  • Well I have to say what a bunch of miserly, moaning owd fekkers you lot are :D

We've got people who don't give to charities coz they spend money on furniture  , some that don't give coz charities have the temerity to advertise :rotfl: , and those who feel riddled with guilt at the mere thought of being asked to give.

They equip their offices, advertise there existance and ask directly for one good reason.

Surprise, surprise they are all part of the process of raising more funds. Coz it helps if they are organised, people know about them and then they ask for money.

As for the poster above who basically said "charity = scroungers"..... I truly hope that nobody in your immediate family or circle of friends, finds themselves in need of any the organisations who rely on charity to get them through, some or any, of the most difficult circumstances it is possible to experience as a human being. You are clearly devoid of compassion and how you can possibly handle the bitterness that must accompany this... well I really have no idea.

Like everybody else I get this stuff through the letterbox too..... and I want none of it either. So if its something that somebody might get some use from, it goes to the charity shop next time I'm buying the groceries.... if not.... to the recycling bin. I feel secure enough in my own mind to do this without feeling guilty, even if they rattle the tin under my nose.

As for that other brainwave of some sort of "umbrella" organisation to distribute cash to worthy causes. Well we have that.... its called central government.

Unfortunately while the vast majority of the population remain so riddled with cynicism (thermalaudio ?) that they refuse to elect a government that might be able to even discuss or suggest increasing taxes to a level where they can adequately fund such things as say, erm....... Cancer research, then I guess we are stuck with having such annoying guilt inducing rubbish through are letter box on an annual basis.

    Happy Christmas you luvverly people.
  • It seems a waste just to recycle them for the sake of it. Why not use the cards if you want to without feeling guilty. The people who received them did not ask for them. Unfortunately I am sure that there are enough people who are guilt tripped into sending £6. I sometimes purchase items that cost slightly more than the average but I know that this is support for the charity. This is my choice and not based on guilt. Maybe I am stubborn but if someone tries to guilt trip me it has the opposite effect.

There are some charities that do waste money and get rich. Most probably do what they can to get money for their charity. They are fighting for same money so if one jazzes up their shop the others need to keep up. Personally I like shops where you can have look through things rather than boutique types but I guess there must be quite a few that prefer the later.

May you could give a bit extra to the charity that you support if it makes you feel better.
