OK I see what you're saying.
You know years ago when you connected to the internet it made a dial up tone? When I phone the number on their website, which is just a normal home number, it does that. Very strange. So I can't phone by the looks of it! It isn't going through to anyone.

Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated

thats sounds like you are ringing a fax number as you hear that number if you dial a fax only line, i've done it a few times myself when i've dialled the wrong by mistake and rung the fax instead of phone line.

What about the bed frame, you don't mention that, did you buy that somewhere else. Maybe the free delivery is for a complete bed, or the free delivery is not subject to any other offers.
Either way a tenner isn't too bad for delivery.

Pay the tenner and do it with good grace :-)

as i said above the deal on the website is not the same deal you negotiated seperately and you're better off so i see no grounds for demanding free delivery.....

Sorry Toffe, but I'm not sure what your point is? On the website, (http://www.straitonbedcompanyltd.co.uk/) the free delivery offer states, "We offer free delivery within the local area on all beds and same day delivery can usually be arranged if required." The option of free delivery is not attached to any offer.

If they offer free delivery, then it sounds like the salesman, who must know that delivery is offered free on the website, was trying it on to get a few extra quid out of you and £150 for a mattress doesn't sound like much of a bargain to me, pretty much the average price for an average mattress!

Exactly my point. It isn't an offer. It just states that they do free delivery. So why am I being charged? My point about it not being a big company etc was that they probably offer discount to every customer in their shop. It isn't like IKEA. The fact that he took £150 of in a minute when I didn't even say anything about it or try to haggle shows me they probably take money off for everyone (well it worked, I bought it!)
I am 2 minutes down the road. It states that they are two minutes from the city bypass, well you can see my house from the entrance/exit to/from the city bypass! Literally two minutes down the road! So I don't think a tenner is very good when I'm trying to save money and could have walked with it. Wish I had now!

I bought the bed frame in the shop too, it was £89 and he charged me £90 when I paid but as he'd knocked money off the mattress I didn't mention it. It fitted in my car.
The cardboard was damp and I was a bit like hmmm but took it anyway. Bed frame seems fine. Making up up tomorrow so will find out! No instructions with it though! :S

Gutted the only number they have is a fax number or I would phone and ask about it :(

my point is that you have no "right" to receive anything for free and if you can go into a shop and negotiate a discount then the saleman is perfectly entitled to negotiate a delivery charge into the deal, i.e "yes we will discount the mattress by £150 but you'll have to pay the delivery charge of £10"

it's called negotiation, and it works both ways!

Like I said before though, I was guaranteed the price of £150 for the mattress before he even knew I was going to buy it, before he even knew how I was getting it home, I even had him write it down and I went and looked round other stores before deciding to go back to him and get that mattress.
We did not negotiate that I would get the mattress for £150 if I paid £10 for delivery. If I chose to get that mattress, it was going to cost me £150. There was no deal.
I bought the mattress and a bed frame. AS I WAS PAYING he asked how I was getting it home. I said in the car, he said bad idea, we do delivery ... you know the rest. Then we discussed getting it home for a good 5 mins, by this point I had paid. There was no, 'you can get the mattress for £150 if you pay for delivery'.
I don't want to argue with you. Sorry. I came here to find out what my rights were about refusing to pay since they do free delivery.
    Sorry about the misundersanding :undecided
