The childcare costs are a short term issue though, we have a 2 year old who goes to child care part time, this fits in with my shifts and my wife having reduced her working hours.
In 1 years time my daughter will start part time school and this will allow us to reduce the hours of child care needed and in 2 years time no child care will be needed saving hundreds each month.

    Edit

I do think though that if 1 partner gives up work to be a stay at home mum etc then the other working partner should be able to claim the tax free allowance etc for the non working partner.

This is true, it is a short(ish) term problem which will slowly deacrese.

As for shifting the tax allowance, that is actually a good idea it could really help those in that situation.

I suppose it does come down to waht I say, you shouldn't have children if you can't affrod them. To which there is certain parts of society which actually see children as a money tap so they can stay out of work.

In short the goverment shouldn't pay you to have children, help not a problem, but you should have children if you have no way of supporting them yourself.

Please dont bite my head off for bringing this up, but the reason we had increasing house prices in my opinion was becuase of dual income families, and the strive for financial independance of the lady in the home, and to develop their career
Nail on the head !! I think many of the problems we are facing now is down to the two income family. In "the old days" the majority of mums stayed at home and looked after the kids and any job was for "a little bit extra". Now it is have a career, get pregnant, have 2 months off and then childminders and back to work. Another problem coming is that early retirement will be difficult because they are heading for 60 with kids still at uni, mine were all done and dusted before 50 ;)

    .

Seems a 'no brainer' to me.

Just don't have kids if you cannot afford them. The country has no need for them.

I will say I can see this huge problem as it does seem the rewards for doing nothing can be as big as the rewards for working hard.

It does concern me how child care will work as I am an accountant and my other half is a teaching assistant. Luckily her hours will usually fit quite well with children but as you can guess none of us can convert to nights.

With that we are doing this so we can buy a home ourselves, to which nobody can kick us out (generally). I think our joint income is enough for us to see reward over benefits but I can guess that many on lower incomes will seem like they are wasting there time.

£80 a week nursery costs, what is the problem?

So the hard working middle class wil pay thru nose for childcare and workshy chavs will breed like animals because their childcare/housing/etc. will be borne by taxpayers?
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

How old are the 'old days' because both my parents worked as did most of my friends parents.

What a nice black and white world you live in.

All the middle class are hardworking and anyone in receipt of benefits is a chav.

    You sound delightful.
