Well worth going through the "I'm thinking of leaving" route. I had issues and got a free upgrade and a couple of months free.
It must be this thread as my own BB went down yesterday (no lights on the modem). Quick check with a voltmeter showed it was the transformer. Down time was a couple of minutes.
I've got a spare modem so swapped the transformer over. Rang the foreign call centre, explained the issue and took a deep sigh as I had to let her go through her script -- "have you plugged it into another socket" "yeees!". "Try turning it off and ....." "Done that!".
Obviously no IT ability and just running through a set script, she was very nice and polite and trying her best to help. Once she had run out of script she said she's sending me another modem.0 -

You will never get a """ spare modem """ to work - ever !
You will never get a """ spare modem """ even one you own registered originally to you to work - ever !
Each modem has a DIN number on the bottom linked to the 48 hour licence issued to your very specific modem by the registration server. Only one DIN number per modem is possible.
Whether it works or not is one issue but a """ spare """" will never work.

OP...If you want a freephone number for Virginmedia customers services, try http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php and enter Virginmedia in 'enter company name to search for' field.
It will give you some freephone numbers for Virginmedia; although I have never used them as I have a VM phone line and so dial 150/151.
Good luck and hope this helps.0 -
OP...By the way, if you are transferred to an Indian call centre, just ask the Indian person politely to be transferred to someone in the UK. It works for me everytime.0

Called back, given the same story. Got £25 off my bill. Still, I'd rather have the connection I'm paying for.
Contract is up with them next month so I plan on calling and saying I'm leaving, see if I can get a discount for the year.Sigless0 -
