We crate trained our pup. She's a cav as well, 8mths now. Some people will 'section off' parts of a crate to use as toilet areas but this to me defeats the purpose of he crate almost. If the crate is too big the pup will do their business in it as well. We had to close off the back of the crate until she was around 6mths as it was too big. The dog should have enough room to stand and turn around comfortably but not much else. What size is your crate?
We used puppy pads during the day outside of her crate for her as we knew she couldn't hold it and in my opinion it was easier to clean up as doing her business was inevitable. Many disagree with the use of these as it associates with going in the house but our pup associated going with the pads not the house so when they were lifted for good she would hold it. However they were only used and placed down when we left the house, never when we were home. When at home she was taken outside on a lead and given a treat to reinforce good behaviour outside.
Puppies do take a while to housetrain. It gets very frustrating but they will get the hang of it. After a few weeks they will catch on. Cavs are very smart! But don't expect too much of your pup for the first year. They will still make mistakes but hopefully with patience and good training it all pays off in the end. Well I'm hoping so anyway!

Arran used to eat his :(, once he was trained it stopped but it wasn't nice at the time.

My boy used to do this too and one of the incidents that I can now laugh at but wasn't laughing at the time involved poo in the park.

My boy found a small black plastic bag in the bushes and I assumed it had a used nappy in it as it was bulging. rather than try to make an issue of it I called both dogs over to me offering treats hoping he would drop the bag in exchange for a treat - not a chance.

Eventually after him carrying the bag for 15 minutes we went back to the car and he still wouldn't let it go. By this point he was in the boot of the car and I decided to make a lunge for it get it off him and job done. If only....

The bag didn't have a nappy in it, it was literally bulging with a sloppy !!!! as I found out when the bag burst over both of us. My hand and sleeve was covered in some random dog (or human ) !!!!! and my dog had it dripping out of his mouth. Absolutely disgusting. there was no facilities to get washed as some a-hole burnt the public toilets down so I had to drive home with a !!!!!! hand, not nice.

I can look back and laugh now but at the time I was certainly not amused. Thankfully he has got over his !!!! obsession.

OP you have all of this still to come.

Quite a few puppies do that. It is because their mother cleans up after them by eating their poo and so they see their mum doing it and think "so that's what I'm supposed to do with this!" and then do it themselves!

The breeder I got my last pup from was absolutely on the ball, as soon as the pups could eliminate by themselves their mum was out of a job on that score, because the breeder would 'scoop the poop' before the mum could get near it. That pup never had a taste for poo.

The pup before that was a rescue from a big litter, mum had to do a lot more of the cleaning, took me a year to persuade that pup that poo wasn't a yummy snack :D

So from this scientific study of 2 pups, I agree ;)

Between the 2 threads it seems as if the OP is getting hacked off with the peeing and pooping already....and no puppy should be sh!tting in their crate if they are being taken out often enough - and I suspect the lights go out and the puppy is left locked in her crate, in the dark and cold, until morning...and the OP wonder's why she is smelling of poo (which will be distressing her out no end)

Poor wee thing...I really feel for her (the puppy, not the OP)

No offence i asked you to keep your single minded views out of my threads, you provide no positive info, and its taken you a good hour since i asked you t ofind someone else to whine about, now you've come back having had long enough to think of another approach to put me down s a new owner, or gain some kind of 'backup' by saying how sweet ohers posts are. DO NOT assume my home is neither cold nor dark at night, because where pup is kept, it isnt.

Yes i was told by the KC breeder not to take her out til after her 2nd jabs, and the vet told me that as well Friday 6pm when he gave her her 2nd vaccines (dont tell me, the vet is wrong and probably gave her the wrong jabs, and doesnt know what he's talking about)

As for my pup smelling of !!!!!!, well she did this morning bless her thats why im on here all day trying to ask for help, guess its better my pup smelling of it than you coming in here trying to stir the stuff up. If you cant offer advice, and help, go away. Everyone bar you is helping out, and your taking up my valuable time trying to defend myself against your stupid, insulting rants. i'm actually embarrassed Im having to reply to you, its insulting this thread so please go wind someone else up, and leave me, and all the helpful people ive spoke to today, alone

9 weeks is a bit young. We watched our doodle like a hawk during the day and put him in the garden regularly. I don't think it's a problem using the outside as long as other dogs have not been in the area. I think it's better that teaching one thing then another.

At night, I got up twice and took him out for the first two weeks (I was knackered) then once a night for the next two weeks. He never pooped in his crate or indoors and was virtually trained after two weeks (with the odd accidental wee) and 100% after four weeks.

Patience and watch the !!!!!! closely.

My mum has a spaniel puppy and right up to about 4/5 months old she was letting her out at about midnight and then again 4.30ish - there's no way she would have been able to hold it all night.

Now, not wishing to get my head bitten off I will say this very tactfully, but please re-check with your vet for clarification on the 'not going out until after 2nd vacs' as I've grown up with dogs, still have (and occasionally foster) dogs and my MIL is an ex-breeder and I've never heard of a dog not being allowed outside to do its business - AFAIK it just refers to walking in 'the big wide world' where it will come into contact with other dogs - but. like I said, do get it clarified with your vet - it only takes a phone call - and he/she may have specific reasons for teling you that which we obviously are not aware of :)

The sooner pup associates outside with wee-ing etc the sooner she will be able to communicate to you that she needs to go :D

    It's a public forum...which means I can post what I want.

As for looking for 'backup'?!! EH? Maybe in your immature world that's how you post but not here sunshine - the post made me smile so I said so...just as yours made me feel so so sorry for the poor puppy sitting wondering why she is alone and needing a crap - but don't let that rouse you out your comfy bed eh?

And if you don't want to 'waste your valuable time' replying to me - then don't. Couldn't give a toss either way to be honest.:D

Personally I dont like crates. I wouldn't use one. Poor little baby she needs to be with you so you can pick up on her cues and she can get reassurance from you. Its really hard work having a pup but its not the pups fault and its your job to help pup get control of wee and poo. When the pup has an "accident" its not pups fault - its yours!

I dont agree about Loopy Girl - I think she was trying to help you.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
