Most retailers do this from time to time, its only to see where customers are travelling from to get to the stores, helps them plan advertising and where to build new stores etc hardly worth getting worked up about, it was only a postcode not your name, address and phone number..

Yes, this was what I was told in a Focus diy store when I asked why they wanted my postcode.
I personally don't mind because it only identifies me as living in one of thirty houses with the same postcode. I doubt my surname would help either as there are three with the same too!

Are you talking about when buying a TV or getting a refund?

If you give false details when returning something that turns out not to be faulty (whether through error or dishonestly), the fact that you gave false details would add weight to the argument that you asked for a refund fraudulently.

When buying a TV (or any other device capable of recieving a television broadcast such as DVD with freeview, or a laptop with a TV Card) you must provide your details as it is for checking against who does and does not own a valid TV licence.

when i worked in retail we had a few angry customers through the dor asking why they were getting "junk mail scams" through thier doors asking them to pay for an "obviously fake" TV licence. I swear half of those people didnt even realise what a TV licence was.

Name + Postcode + Electoral Roll = Junk mail*

*Unless you opted out of the for-sale version of the Electoral Roll at registration time.
