I think a lot of retailers ask for name and post code etc when returning goods so auditors can check staff aren't fiddling by pocketing the money from fraudlent returns0

Nothing really to do with the subject but a few years ago I was avoiding someone so ducked quickly into a shop. I was getting funny looks then felt rather stupid when I realised it was Long Tall Sally and I'm 5' 1".
done that myself, but when i was in a hurry to buy some trousers.just dived into the 1st shop, shop up here called "high and mighty" for guys over 6'2" i'm 5'7", when the guy come over i just asked him for a scarf:o
we both had a chuckle and i left:rotfl:0 -
There is one financial services provider which is currently sending all their junk mail addressed to me to their own head office address!
Inserting their own Head Office telephone number is good for websites too."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
I work for asda and when this comes round i've known myself to type the stores post code in rather than ask an already irate customer for their postcode.0

yup but it's part of the job.0

I asked at Mamas and Papas why they wanted my details - name and address - they said that it was in case I required a refund or exchange but had lost my receipt, and that they wouldn't pass the details on to anyone else.0

I use SW1A 1AA when asked for a postcode and I don't want to give mine.

I always type in our head office address (or the local post depot) if someone doesn't want to give their address. Or, if it's for a stupid reason, such as some products set up incorrectly - for quite a while, anyone buying an ink cartridge was prompted for a name & address.
But on big stuff, it does make it worthwhile unless you plan on keeping your receipt very safe and dealing with any faults yourself (i.e. not asking me to phone repairers). The other big reason is that if any product is part of a safety recall, you can be contactedSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

In Phones4U, I was asked to complete a form with my name, address, how many airtime minutes I used per month, etc. so that the manager "could assess my usage and find me the best deal". I looked at the small print and it basically said, "You agree to giving us your personal data to store in a database and sell to any number of companies for profit...". So I explained that they could ask me questions directly if they wanted. With the shocking sales tactics that followed, including outright lies and blatent deception, I left the shop and will never return. So much for earning a few extra pennies by selling my data...
Ha ha, we have the honour of being 'asked to leave' a phones4u. Our crime? Looking with disdain at each other while the staff when asked what operating system the phone they were recommending was on couldn't come up with a better answer than 'it's the usual one', and couldn't explain why they were recommending a phone which didn't have any of the features I wanted.0 -
