Nosey Retailers!

Options
I bought a pair of trousers in Long Tall Sally this afternoon ( no choice, I have very long legs and nowhere else does them long enough).

I was amazed to be asked for my postcode at the till!

I said no and from the stunned look on the girls face I guess that I must have been the first to refuse. To be fair she didn't push it or I'd probably have made do with my existing trousers.

Most retailers do this from time to time, its only to see where customers are travelling from to get to the stores, helps them plan advertising and where to build new stores etc hardly worth getting worked up about, it was only a postcode not your name, address and phone number..

I sold my postcode in TKMaxx for a carrier bag (they wanted 4p for the carrier bag).

Nothing really to do with the subject but a few years ago I was avoiding someone so ducked quickly into a shop. I was getting funny looks then felt rather stupid when I realised it was Long Tall Sally and I'm 5' 1". :o
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

This has happened to me in Tesco, the first time I asked what it was for - the girl didnt know so I didnt tell her. The next time I was asked, I again asked the girl - she said its just to see what catchment our customers are in, so I told her. I must admit it did take me by surprise too!!

For things like this, I always give them the postcode of the school I used to go to. People want too much personal info nowadays IMHO

Yes I know why they try and do it. It just amazes me that people co- operate with them - I'd want a 10% discount for professional consultation fees! But then I don't use loyalty cards either. My privacy is worth more to me than the odd penny or two per pound.

Did I sound worked up?- I was more amused by the girls reaction!

Mind you Comet nearly lost a sale by insisting on my info before selling me a SatNav. The assistant had to call a manager who reluctantly agreed that I didn't have to give my name and address.

It annoys me, too - and I work in a shop!

We do it at my shop for returns, which is just to check that people aren't abusing the right to return things in a serial manner, but some shops just expect you to hand over your details left, right and centre!

More people should refuse. Mostly, it's just data collection for marketing purposes and it's out of order.
