Precisely - An indication of intended engine rotational speed.
It doesn't mean that if you hit 2k then your engine has just spun 2,000 times.
it would take 1 minute for it to have done thatIf Adam and Eve were created first

just re read the first post
i think if it was re worded then the little discussion wouldnt be going on
"I am getting as high as 1000 extra revs when going from first to second gear"
"I am getting an increase in rpm as much as 1000rpm when going from first to second gear"
is that better0 -

At what RPM are you changing gear? Do you lift of the throttle when you do so?
I have a VX Vectra and if the engine is being "laboured", when you press the clutch the RPMs will rise sharply.
How about try giving it a good "hoofing" and see what it does?“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

When I accelerate away from a standing start in first gear,ie: traffic lights, roundabout etc, in the seconds it takes to lift my foot off the throttle, depress the clutch pedal, select second gear and engage the clutch again the rev counter has registered up to an extra 1000 rpm before dropping down again. I have been told by vauxhall technicians that it is EU ruling now that all new cars do this to burn off the remaining gases in the cylinders.0
