yes but effectivly the engine is now doing 1000rpm more

It will only be giving 1k more revs afte a minute.

same as if you went from 20mph to 30mph you would say your not becuase you havent gone 30 miles yet

    M - Miles
    P - Per
    H - Hour

But it would take 1 hr to travel 30 miles hense the conversion

Thats the way the automobile calculations are calculated. 30 mph means you will be at 30 mph but it will take 1 hr to complete 30 miles

  • yes but it doesnt take you an hour to get from 20 - 30

Obviously. but thats an indicated speed change that takes seconds.

MPH is calculated by travelling at a certain speed meaning you will cover x amount of miles in an hour.

    Same goes for KMH

    Same goes for RPM

He stated that when he changes gear his car gives him an extra 1k of revs.

an extra 1k of revs would take 1000 revolutions of the crankshaft and take 60 seconds.

I never construed anything just pointed out the basics

  • yeah we know that but you basically saying that if your rev count says 1k then goes to 2k in say 3 seconds your not actually doing 2k unitll a minute has passed

rpm is a measurement of rotational speed. its there for an instant reading unless you go near the event horizon in space

that would be a great one for the police if you get caught speeding sorry officer i wasnt doing 45mph as i havent completed 45 miles yet

    That is correct,

Your rev counter will be indicating 2k rpms and yes the crankshaft will have increased it's rotational speed but it would still take a whole 60 seconds to complete 2k revolutions

  • but you will agreee that it is doing 2k rpm

and that the OP's rpm rose by 1k

I'll agree that whilst the dash will show a chosen engine speed of 2k, it will still take 1 minute for the engine to have covered 2,000 revolutions. The rev counter doesn't have spaces for each revolution does it

Therefore it's an indicated engine rpm guide. You can't change the fact that it will still take 60 seconds to achieve 2,000 revolutions

the ops rev counter jumped but the engine never gave "an extra 1k revs" because it would have taken one minute to do that

The engine on the ops car maybe gives an extra 10-20 rpm at max when he changes gear

  • but the rev counter is an indication of rotational speed not an accumulation of the total number of revolutions
